I went that way on my Cali II about 6 months ago. I had to file a flat on the inside of the rim where the valve fits and drill it out a little larger for the valve.
So far I have never had to add air.
BTW they were done at a shop so I never had time to clean the place where the bead sits properly but it sealed perfectly.
My spoked Eldorado was another story, had a few leaks in the front but it seems good now touch wood.
