When I was in A&P school, they wanted us to paint a client's Cessna in imron.....without any PPE. No masks, no air supply, inside the closed hangar. I refused. They told me I would flunk out if I did not apply some paint to the plane. So, I went in, held the gun steady till the paint dripped off the fuselage. They told me to get the hell out of there. I passed the course, but got  reputation as a shitty painter....

This stuff sounds pretty amazing, and scary at the same time. Is it single stage, no clear coat, or do you still clear coat using the same type of paint?

No clear coat. What you shoot is what you get. None of that sissy sanding, buffing, clear coating that amateurs do to cover up their mistakes..

Chuck's right. Imron/acrylic urethanes are catalyzed. They are hard and glossy, so do not need clear. However, clear has been developed and now is being used for the same reason as in automotive- it gives you the ability to call a "mulligan" in case you need to sand out defects.

Painted a car with this in 1980. Had a friend who painted planes for Grumman, and he hooked me up. Took a while to cure, but stuff hardened like steel.

Dupont is still in the auto finish business- they sell products under the Chromax brand for base/clearcoat application.

Nope. Axalta makes it. DuPont sold Axalta about six years ago.

Don't know why the font size suddenly changed...

Speaking of motorcycle paint, I need to paint a Triumph T100 frame and parts so I will motivate myself to put the dam thing together.  It won't be a show queen, nor a daily rider, just something to ride when I want a smaller vintage bike.

I've heard everything from spray bomb to Imron, semi-gloss to full gloss.

What would be closest to the original enamel appearance without being too spendy?
POR 15 is perfect if you want a gloss black, apply with a brush, no spray required and the brush marks disappear before it drys.
Don't worry if you get it on your hands, it won't wash off but disappears after a couple of weeks as your skin defoliates LOL
I did my Eldorado frame about 5 years ago and it still looks good.
I didn't use any of the special prep liquid but it had a good sanding.
