I saw it in 3-D last Friday and then went with my daughter again on Saturday. As most everyone knows, the very first movie was episode 4, so this picks up where the first three (4,5,6) left off. Personally, I thought it was fantastic. It is difficult to describe to anyone without giving away spoilers, so I will refrain from that. When it becomes available, I WILL OWN the 3-D Blue Ray. This movie evokes your emotions on many levels. It keeps you entertained from beginning to end.

If you liked the original, episode 4, you will like this!

Another one here who saw the original as a kid with my brother and sister back in 1977.

Saw the new one last night and enjoyed it a lot...a few characters were very good, others to be developed more...

Glad they have revived the series again...

Notice the irony of having a young Millennial ( redundant I know) now piloting the Millennium Falcon!!!

I saw it and I thought the editing was great, we already knew the story.
I also enjoyed Revenant, Hateful Eight, Spotlight, and Trumbo - not so good were Joy, The Danish Girl, and Carol.

We were happy to see it - more so for the theater's liquor license.

All in all though, it completely missed out on any WOW moments in either story telling or imagery.

Lest one toss the handle, jaded - it's worth noting that the same director's re-makes of Star Trek seriously impressed me and other recent offerings such as "Pacific Rim" were quite impressive.

Star Wars just didn't have that "wanna talk about it" feel so we're hoping it's put down to pedestrian ground work for the following movies. It was more of an "so, we saw that" event.

But hell, to be fair, nothing's measured up to the original for either of us.

BIG pluses to this installment though:
No asinine pet characters. Here think militant teddy bears or aquatic stooges.
No insipid romances.
No tedious segments inserted to pump up merchandising. Here, think of the Pod Racer snooze fest.
No boring and barely plot supported, "let's touch all the bases" political scenarios.
No accents causing one to actually wince from time to time.

the wife and I saw it Monday afternoon, wasn't very crowded. :1:

It was much better than the last three, but not better than the first or Empire Strikes back, better than the Ewoks.

Some of the new characters were not developed enough, and some were just weak.  I will see the next one, to see where it goes.

I would say see it, don't judge it by the last three, it will bring you up to date what has happened since Ewoks, so that is good.  The plot as stated here was a remix of the original Star Wars, nothing wrong with that, it works.  I thought they did an very good job with Hans Solo character, much better developed than with the other characters.

CGI was not over the top like the last three,

agree with Spotlight and especially Trumbo.  Haven't seen the others, in fact, they aren't even out yet here.

Saw it this afternoon with the family at the local Cinebarre.  Their Cinebrew IPA was quite tasty.  :boozing:  As for the movie I give it an 8.  It's a tough thing for a director, I would think, to handle a story that is both known and unknown.  I give JJ Abrams props for taking this on.  In the end though this is Star Wars and a fairly simple story of good vs evil.

Merry Christmas!

Thanks Mr Westbury , that simple story of good vs evil was why the first three worked so well .
