Go for it, [Ncdan] - it's simple. I almost always get it right. The trick to remember is that it's better to get them too loose than too tight.

Not as loose as I did, of course. But the bike was still running great.

It's surprising how much gap you can have without a lot of noise.
I did a routine check on my Lario, when I took the valve cover off one of the screws fell out on the ground.

BMWs use Gutentight..
Seriously, it's not fussy. The only time I stripped one, I was foolishly using a torqe wrench on a hotrod engine I was building. It was either the wrong spec.. or it coulda  been the drugs.
At any rate, it was a learning experience for me.

Well, I figured out where the 20K miles came from at least.

That was the last time the heads were torqued.

Either you set it wrong last time or you have a lot of wear.  Seems simple enough to check, ride it 1k miles as others have suggested and recheck it.

6-8 foot pounds.  Probably better to do it by feel.   I don't think they need to be super tight.
