YOUR BIKE'S NAME
« on: March 22, 2020, 12:42:26 PM »
Hello all,                                                                                                                 3-22-20
I apologize in advance if this thread has already been 'woven' on this site but...

Our bikes are very personal to us.  We ride them, detail them, farkle them up, etc.  One of the most personal things we bestow upon our two (or three) wheeled confidantes is their name.  So here's the question; what is your bike's name and why?

I'll throw the first coins in the fountain.  I have a 2015 and a 2017 Cali 1400 Tour.  After my first ride on the'15, I parked the my garage and of course, it started 'moaning'.  We all know why, that's not the point.  Right then I decided that this bike would be called "Moaning Lisa", or just Lisa (thank you Leonardo).  Of course when the '17 did it as well, the only thing to do was call it "Moaning Myrtle", or just Myrtle (thank you Rowling).

So there it is...how about yours?

Be well,
DougG

I call them what ever the manufacturer calls them. If I have mutiples of the same model bike I preface the manufacturers model with the color. If I have mutiple bikes in the same color I preface the manufacturers model name with the year.

My 74 Eldorado police bike is Walter. That is the first name of original owner, he was police chief in small town next to mine. He bought it new and dressed it out to travel far and wide. I purchased it from his son after many years of trying. He finally said yes to me when he needed money to put Mustang back on road. Big smile on my face every time I ride Walter.

I don't name bikes as a general rule. But my wife's red Yamaha FJ09 is named "Aka Tombo".  Historical significance, after the YA-1, and because she has made pets of a couple dragon flies that visit her around the pool every summer. She gets them to land on her finger.
The best part of riding a motorcycle is to tilt the horizon and to lift the front coming out of a corner and to drift the back end powering thru loose dirt and to catch a little air topping a hill and... yeah it's all good!

Just within the family, we have the Guzzi sisters, Theresa and Millie. The Triumph is Trixie, of course. The F650 never inspired a name. We'll see if the XR350 earns one.

When I bought my Ambassador after sitting in a guys garage for 13 years (it was his father's bike), it had the personalized plate on it. The Italian name for the bike was "Lepiace". Since Italian is a very old language there are many words that don't have a direct translation to English. The word means (approx.)  'she who draws attention to herself' or thereabouts. After the DMV registration here in California has escalated at an alarming pace and since there is not a one time fee for the personalized plate I decided to forgo putting it on the bike. But the name is very apropos...

The roadster is small by today's standard, and it's emerald green, so it's named Verdina  -  little green one in Italian (I believe)

I bought the white 8V Griso in Germany so it's Weißgerät ("inspired" by the Schwarzgerät in Pynchon's Gravity's Rainbow)
I believe Weißgerät can also mean "household appliance" in German  :boozing:

When I was rebuilding my Convert, I took lots of photos of my progress. Each night when I'd sit down at the computer to download them, about 75% of the time Ram Jam's "Black Betty" would play on the radio station I was streaming. So, since the Convert is black, it's known as "Black Betty".  :azn:

My 2013 V7 Stone is named “Burbles” for the sound she makes.  But my wife hates that name and calls her Sophia instead.

My Kawasaki 250 Ninja is named “Beezer.”   Because he is a friendly hyperactive kid who has to go everywhere at 10,000 rpm, or more.

My Quota is “Mirabel” the Moto Guzzi. On the ride back from Florida I tried out different names to find one that suits the bikes personality. Mirabel just seems to fit.

The Victory is “Ledbetter” bc it’s bright yellow and I love the song Yellow Ledbetter.

Our fiat is Fiona, the Jeep is Giuseppe. My Cummins is Brutus. I know, we’re a weird family but I like us! 😃

Hey, my sig line is gone! I checked my profile and its there. Might have something to do with the reboot?

Anyway, the SPII is Il Duce' II and the Cal III is Il Duce' III.
Il Duce is Italian for "the leader" which is what Mussolini was called.

I have always named my bikes...not sure why...just a habit.  In the current stable:

1998 Moto Guzzi Centauro GT = "The Yellow Horse"

2014 Victory Vision = "Moby Dick, aka, The Great White Whale"

My vehicles don't always have names, depending on when or whether they "earn" one somehow.  The best ones do.
My best motorcycle was a 1993 Ducati M900 Monster, which earned the name "Patina". because she had one.
I had bought her new in 1993.  Below is a picture of her at the 2016 MotoGP at COTA, the weekend she turned over 250K miles.

Hi all,                                                                                                                          3-23-20

VERY IMPRESSIVE!  You folks put a lot of thought into the process.  I just let the bikes name themselves.

Be well,

My ex-wife liked to name all her vehicles, and since I now own two vehicles she used to own, they still have those names.
My current M900 Monster, a '95, she gave me in the divorce, is named Jonquil (French for daffodil), because she is bright yellow.
My car, which I bought from her when she got a new one, is a 2002 Mini Cooper S, named Marian, because she's a red fox.

Also, my 1960 Heinkel 103A1

I don't really name my bikes, maybe I should.  I guess I do use some nicknames when I tell my wife "I'm taking the <bike nickname> out".

Let's see:
"Griso the beasto"
"The quirky Quota"
Sadly the V7 iii Racer gets called "The Racer"
And the V-Strom 1000 is just "V"
And the KTM 990 SMT is just "The 990"

My lime green/yellow road bicycle gets called "Hi Viz".

I did have one bike I called "The stupid BMW", and maybe another called "The damn Ducati".

Guess I need to work on real names.

My first '12 Stelvio never had a name but my current red '16 is "Ruby". Pretty obvious why and that was almost from day one.
It took years to find out what my T3 is called and in the absence of a name I used to refer to her as "Die Alte" (German for "the old one"). Since this year I now know she's called "Dolores".
My '72 Newport is "Clarissa".
