What is the MODERN Moto Guzzi of Cars?
« on: November 05, 2022, 09:00:27 PM »
Title Says it all......

I had a 1997 E36 BMW M3 for 20 years and LOVED it............... In 2020 I bought a Mustang Bullitt and it is fantastic, but like the FJR 1300 I had before I was converted to Guzzi in 2015, I am BORED unless I am driving at Go to Jail or Cemetery speeds.....

So.............. What is the Moto Guzzi of Cars???? What has character, performance and life in a modern car?  Don't say Miata...... That's a girls car................ ..

It is the Miata you big insecure *****

After that, crap, I dunno.... Probably not a car at this point.

The Wrangler, ya know it's a tractor.

Other than that so many things in the automotive world are bland and completely "modernized" for better or worse.

The Mini at least enjoys the "fun" aspect.

But really... No everything else I can think of is uh different.

How about the WRX?

Boxer motor is different from almost everyone else and has advantages and disadvantages.

It's got decent performance but nothing like the top dogs.

It's still relatively old school. Hell last time I checked it was solid lifters.

And it doesn't give a crap how others do it.

The short answer is that there is no equivalent.  A car is a car and a motorcycle is a motorcycle. I'm not trying to be pedantic, i promise.

What are your metrics?  Run forever?  Easy (but regular) maintenance?  Overbuilt?  Weird quirks?  Unusual?
I cannot include 'fun to drive' in my assessment, because what is fun in a car is such a different experience.

I enjoy my wife's VW Beetle- it checks off a lot of the above...but it ain't a Guzzi experience.  We don't get the Fiat Panda here in the US, but that might be a small block comparo  (ducks and runs for cover).

Saab 900 is the first car that comes to mind.....Quirky, cool, different than most cars in engine layout, aircraft  engineering background, built like a tank, designed to last forever, if properly maintained, and sorted. Very Guzzi like!    :thumb:

Maybe I'm wrong, but I took modern to mean "current" or at least recent like last decade or so.

I may be biased, but the Jeep Wrangler could be it, pulls like a tractor, not overly complex but at times can be quirky...

You didn't set any parameters regarding cost, # of seats, dealership network, so, bearing that in mind: Morgan.

The Pendleton retro sports car. Hand made in the UK and fitted with a Guzzi engine. Weighs 289Kg and goes pretty quick.

I agree with the notion that there isn’t one.

I think you could make a pretty good argument for the Saab 900, but those are long ago gone.

I was a Saab guy for years. Had an 82 and 86 Turbo. Put 500K on the 82, and my son wrecked the 86...... I've always said if I could buy ANY new car today, it would be a 1984-1986 900 Turbo 3 door with the SPG motor.

I bought a 9-3 Viggin and got rid of it when the warranty ran out, it was a mess, so I jumped to a 1997 BMW E36 M3 in the 2000's and had that till 2020 when I bought the Bullitt. It's a great car, but it is kind of like the FJR1300. Fast, comfortable, capable, reliable, but not super engaging unless you are riding in go to jail or cemetery speeds.

I do have a 1976 912 which IS sublime, and not a garage queen, but it is a once in a lifetime dream car I hand restored over 10 years and is still a work in progress. It scratches the itch, but is not a daily driver, it deserves better than that.

So yes, a modern car I can drive daily, drive cross country, 4 seats, decent luggage capacity, reliable, easy and cheap/reasonable to maintain and insure, and is super engaging and full of character even driving sedately.  I like driving my truck more than the Bullitt unless I am driving too fast. I mean come on, redline in 2nd gear is 78MPH..... Like the FJR.....

I drove the BRZ/Toyota __ twins, and really liked them, but just too small. Strongly considered the WRX and hope the new release would be a coupe or 3/5 door hatch, but is still a sedan. Drove the Supra and really liked it, but only a 2 seater and luggage is a joke, same for the Porsche Cayman. The M2 has the driving experience I wanted, but is weird looking AND the long term maintenance and cost of ownership is prohibitive for my sensibilities (Gootsie content), Vette is well, a Vette...... Mazda has the 3 which is nice, but also weird looking. VW has the GTI and R which would fit the bill, but they are maintenance and repair monsters, same with the BMW, and while that would be fine while under warranty, I would be SOL when the warranty was up, take a beating on resale, then be in a car payment again. I really don't want that.

Not really complaining, I am blessed and fortunate, and really do like the Bullitt. It is unique and well sorted but I think this is the issue with any of the new cars, even Porsche. The raw visceral connected feel and character has been engineered out for normal driving and you have to push them all to really enjoy.

I hop on a Guzzi and 'IT" is there.... I hop in my Truck and "IT" is there...... I hop in the Mustang and in order for "IT" to be there, I need to push it..... Ah, 1st world problems.......

I REALLY like those...... FIAT did a great job maturing the Miata chassis. Is just a tad too small, missing two seats and needs a new motor every 50K miles....LOL, at least that is the deal with the 500 Abarth that shares the same motor.

Lotus Evora
-old corporate roots of successful racing, but nil the last few decades
-financial history of lucky to still be around
-more recent financial history of passed around by large corporations, but then have the resources to come out with high techy new models
-many years of sticking with similar fundamental design (mostly relatively small mid-engine and lightness for Lotus)
-both my Lotus are subjectively great 'fun' and fit like an old shoe driving comfort but not necessarily great by numbers (0-60 times)
-"They still make those?" for both Guzzi and Lotus at the gas pump with Cali II, Norge, Europa and Evora
-I describe them both as like marriage:  "I can't imagine not, but not sure I can recommend..."  (Applies to my Saabs also.)
-very loyal owner base, with super helpful, enthusiasts when you find the right crowd (yes, compliments to y'all Wildgeese)

It does seem many modern cars are so polished they have smoothed out most of the fun.

For possible "fun" cars, maybe a Hyundai Veloster N?  Or Honda Civic Type R?  Or a Ford Focus RS?

Or anything with the Dodge Hellcat engine in it!!

None of these are Guzzi like at all, but just thinking current ish fun cars to drive.

You just answered your own question.

I forget where I saw it, but there is a great thread out there of someone building a MG engined car.
