Stelvio vs V85 tt
« on: July 02, 2022, 03:07:10 PM »
Took a test ride on a new tt . All positives - smooth engine , plenty of power, great handling, etc. And considerately lighter than the Stelvio. In a conundrum. Can’t decide what to do. Am getting older and the Stelvio can be a beast at times and not as smooth as the tt. Don’t really need the 1200 power as I rarely exceed 80 anyway. Problem is that I still mostly  enjoy the Stelvio but think I might like the tt more as the years roll on.

Buy the tt when the Stelvio gets too big.I will probably downsize to my SPNT in a year or 2.In the meantime ride the Stelvio.

If you are on the interstate a lot, it's hard to beat that extra weight in the Stelvio, but as you have learned, you can bend the rules of physics only so much.  My 85 does OK on the interstate and while it would cruise at any speed you asked (especially with cruise control) it is really happiest at about 70 mph.  Other than interstate cruising, the 85 beats everything else for me.  Maybe this adds something to your consideration.

Slapped arse? Is that good or bad? It is certainly unique.

Both bikes look great, in my opinion, and both ride really well.  However, having had the opportunity to own both bikes (at the same time) for a year, which allowed extended direct comparison, I finally completed the transition to the V85, and don't regret it.  The V85 is the sweetest, nicest, most easy-to-live-with bike I have ever owned, and does everything well that I need it to do.  There isn't much downside.

Cheers,

I had a Stelvio for many years and went cross country with it to do a lot of the Colorado mountain passes.  You can easily exceed the speed limit by 30-40 mph.  It handles the rocky, mountain back roads well but, I was always afraid of dropping it in my drive while pushing it around.  It is just so top heavy.  I bought one of the first V85 that came into the country and did similar trips across Canada as well as the Colorado stuff. It is not quite as good on the interstate, but it still is enough to do 550-600mi days.  I have since bought my second V85 and went to Colorado with 30mi on the bike.  Loved it!  You will not be sorry if you choose the V85 platform.  I was out yesterday and did about 375mi into WV and tomorrow I am heading out to SE Ohio for a 500mi day of twisties.  As I have always said, the V85 does nothing 100% - but it does everything 90+%.

I had a Stelvio, kept it for 6yrs,great bikes but mine was a 2009, I have a TT now, about 1yr. Most of my riding is freeway so I miss the Stelvio.

Like other poster said, 70mph range is best for the v85tt

I avoid interstates as much as possible but have spent my fair share on them over the years out of necessity and the only two bikes that were a pleasure to ride on the interstate were the Concours 1400 and the Triumph Trophy SE.

My plan for the V85TT is to stick with 2 lane and state highways and enjoy the ride.

I don’t even like being on the interstate in a cage anymore.

How about the 35MPG on a Stelvio vs 55MPG on the V85? The 2010 Stelvio I had was way too top heavy but the V85 is very well balanced and feels like 1/3 less weight.

My Stelvio gets 40 with regular on the road trips,35 locally.Your 17 is the last year so may get pricey in a few years, not worth much now.So buy the tt and ride both.

I have neither, and may have missed mention of it in this thread, but the Stelvio would seem a better mount for two-up riding than a V85 in terms of power and saddle room.

That, obviously depends on the "fighting weights" of the pilot and pillion, and (usually, in my experience) with the latter's "need" for all of the cargo space.
