V700 touring?
« on: May 31, 2023, 07:39:43 AM »
Trying to Learn more about Guzzi…

Is anyone “touring” on a V700?  I understand they are a bit vintage, and there are better choices (if you like modern), but some of us still like the old school ways, and I was wondering about the 60’s vintage V700 being capable, and practical.  Any insights would be wonderful!
Thanks for your comments!
Pete

It really depends on what you consider touring, and how well maintained the bike is.

https://motorcyclecannonball.com/  These guys definitely take riding old bikes to a new level.

If I had enough time to ride 45 mph or less all day long with breaks I would tour on any bike in my stable.  When I need to ride faster speeds, and/or carry more gear I will be on the Road Glide or the the V85TT.

I'd say a well maintained V700 would get you where ever you want to go. It worked then, it'll work now. My buddy's V7 Special runs just like my old LeMans (in 4th gear)  :boozing:

I bought 3 700's in 93, toured on 1 till oil pump trashed. Still riding that one with one of other motors. Got an oldest bike award from WI. Doing original motor now, it had been blowed up before I bought it and fixed. It had 2 different rods in it and you can see damage in the block from a broken one spinning. No one wanted them at the time I was buying them, they all wanted 750 Ambo's & 850 Eldo's. 67, 8 & 9 is what I have. I ride the 67, wouldn't think twice about going anywhere on it.
Guzzi made them to tour, if you don't trust your bike get a different mechanic.

Wow!  Wonderful feedback!  And of course, differing opinions (thankfully it's not an oil thread)! Thanks guys (girls?)!

Since I'm my own mechanic, I trust him!

They were built to tour just at a slower speed. 74’ ElDo but close enough. It just takes longer. I still forget I cant makeup time like I do on the Norge.

I tour on my V700s, why not? They are good for 70 MPH cruising speed. will do 60 easily all day long, once you get used to the sounds that come out of them, wear ear plugs as the whining of the gearbox and timing gears may drive you mad.  DonG

You sure can on a Loop.

I had to work at keeping pace with Nick and his Eldo.    NJ to VA Rally a few years ago.

Antietam Classic Cycle tours on them and has no issues!!

I put 70k miles on my (early) '69 Ambo (like a V700 with 54 cc more displacement) without any real problems. Only left me stuck one time when the points burned and I did have my spares with me. My friends Blaine and Lance got me out of that jam. I don't get anywhere any more quickly on my newer bikes - never was a "fast" rider - I'd rather take the "road less traveled" and enjoy the trip.

I'm determined to get it out of "dry dock" this Summer and start putting miles on it again. The only reason why it was in storage in the first place was because I built a V700 to ride!
