Here's a wee update:
Got hold of Muzzimoto stainless steel silencers for a good price. Less than £150 in excellent condition, compared with ~£400 new!
They sounded a bit "rorty" for my liking, so I added some cheap so-called dB killers to the outlets. Now they sound just a little bit deeper than standard and considerably lighter. I needed to make up some small aluminium links, to mount them on the footrest hangars and polish up an exposed bit of the headers. If I get on well with them long-term, It would be good to get matching stainless headers, without those chunky heat shields.
Initial seat-of-the-pants impression is that the bike is stronger in low-end torque and charges uphill with more vigour.
Having done 120 miles, I can say I really do like these: deeper note and definitely a "stronger" engine throughout the rev range. Fuel economy seems unaffected, even with more spirited riding. I'm pretty chuffed, so far.
