Speedo Lens Gasket issue - 74 Eldo
« on: July 13, 2019, 06:13:00 PM »
Hey guys. I went out and put 100 miles or so on the Eldo, today, as it was great riding weather, and I've been working on breaking in the new rings. On the ride, I noticed this issue. Actually, I first noticed it a little while back, but it wasn't as bad, and I kept forgetting to post about it. Anyways, what looks like a cork gasket that seals the speedo cover has started to work loose on the inside (see pic below.) Is there a way for me to open up the speedo and replace that gasket, myself, or is this the kind of thing only a specialist with special tools can do?

Cliff - I didn't see any instructions on Greg's site for pulling and replacing bezels - and that's what's needed here.

I've got a LM4 speedo doing the same thing.

You can try carefully prying up the crimp, but be gentle about it. The metal will want to bend outwards rather than straighten. When all done, you'll have to carefully tap it all back into shape.

When I do it, I've made a form that supports the outer surface of the bezel so it can't bend outwards.

If you decide not to do it yourself, you might find a speedo repair shop in your area.  Or you could send it to me and I'll take care of it.

Try clicking on the link I posted.  I couldn't find it in his directory either, but had seen it on his site.  The direct link came up via google.

The link above covers several options including the specific factory tool, servicing the project with a lathe and doing it manually similar to what you describe.  By hand, Doing it slowly in both directions is important and pressing is better than even gentle hammering.  It's very easy to stretch the metal with no way to fix it.

Bradley at Scbritishcycle on eBay usually has a variety of bezels sets listed for sale and will also install them for extra $$.  He keeps asking me when I'm going to come over with my hammered gauges & fix them.
