Speedhut speedometer

What do you all think is the best way to deal with the now obsolete cable and/or housing when you switch to the Speedhut GPS unit?

What bike?

I just installed a SpeedHut Speedo and Rev Counter onto an 1100 Sport, it's a Magni and the different fairing resulted in being unable to see the warning lights. I also hated the blue speedo, it's far from perfect but I'll be able to see the dash properly now.

Anyway to your question, I removed the cable and the speedo drive internals at the gearbox (remember the bottom washer) then blanked it with a alloy plug like this one

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/M16x1-5-BLACK-METRIC-Hex-Allen-Key-BLANKING-PLUG-BUNG-BLOCKER-Male-Oil-Adapter/272164826776?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649

Picture of the dash it's not the prettiest but I'm reasonably Ok with it

I just put a rubber plug on the engine where the cable went in.

I cut the end of the cable off - the metal part that threaded into the gearbox and filled it with JB Weld.

I just left the cable alone, unattached.  On my V11 Ballabio you really couldn't see the cable end.

It is an '03 EV. All good ideas that I can handle. I wish I had added a logo to the face. It is a big blank face above the dial. Otherwise the eagle would make it look almost authentic.

I don't understand why everyone goes for the expensive GPS speedos, I hated to have something spinning around for nothing so I purchased one of the pulse input types and made a simple pulse unit to fit into the gearbox, it's just a magnet spinning in the original drive, no machining was required.

I put a rubber cap over where the cable was.

Kiwi_Roy: I will embarrass myself and explain why (at least for myself). When I look at your diagram about half of it is self explanatory. The rest of it I would have to be spoon fed. Fr' example: I don't know what a reed switch is, but I am sure I can research it. But it looks like you need to splice it into some wire somewhere. Which? Next: how do you hold the stainless or brass screw in the gearbox and the magnet in the screw? JB weld?  There are a couple of factors. 1) humiliation. I am woefully ignorant, and 2) if I play with it, can I make a mistake that would get really expensive, and I end up where I started or worse?

When the cheesy ITI speedometer went bad at 7k miles on my CalVin, after a lot of research and dead ends or at quotes of hundreds of dollars, I took the advice of one of the guys here. Leave the factory one in place for looks and for around 50- 100 bucks get yourself a quality GPS  bicycle ODOMETER. It will register speed, total miles(which you can't accidentally wipe out) two trip odometers and it will stay changed for a full day of ridding without needing to be recharged.

Adaven, the reed switch is a magnetically activated pair of contacts in a glass tube, under the influence of a field the contacts are attracted together, they are commonly used as the window and door switches in intruder alarms. yes it's just wired to the input of the speedo.

The screw just sits there by it's own weight, yes JBWeld to hold the magnet on. If I made another I would use an 1/8" x 1/8" hobby magnet in a hole drilled through a 1/4" screw at right angles.
Only simple hand tools required.

The main advantages of a GPS speedo are:  lightweight (no cables, sheaths or drives); extremely easy installation ( no wheel sensors or measuring wheel diameters; and accuracy (the GPS readout does not depend on wheel rotation, thus is not affected by changes to wheels or tires -both speed and distance are spot-on accurate.)  Speedhut makes some attractive, customizable and very practical GPS units, some of which can be had with an incorporated tach.  I find my V50's Speedhut GPS speedo a significant improvement over the OE dual-clock dash.

I have a speed hut unit on the LMIII, I plugged the old hole with a rubber plug too. The thing works great, has time, direction of travel, elevation, 1/4 mile mph (slow) and accurate speed what a concept! Well worth the $$ as far as I’m concerned l

Just don't go speeding through a tunnel Haha

I've got a conventional speedo on mine linked to an inductive proximity sensor for just that reason

It's horses for courses I suppose but GPS in Jockland can be far from rock solid reliable

I'd rather have something with a bit of error but I know is going to always read

They make them water resistant if you say its going on a bike.
If you are going to purchase a pair of gauges I strongly advise you not to go for the reset button through the glass, there is a plug in option at the rear which allows you to locate the button in any convenient place like where the old reset knob was or on the bars like a modern Guzzi  (revised)

The tachometer reset only gets used for the initial setup then you might as well remove it.

Of course the eagle graphic is a must have for your Guzzi, you should be able to find L & R Eagles on the link I provided in reply #6

Just ask them to seal it for you.
Mine has the reset button through the glass and has been in a lot of rain. No problems.
