Title: Need some fall color advice
Post by: WP2 on October 12, 2015, 02:15:20 PM
I've enjoyed the fall colors in the Appalachian and Smokey Mountains six or seven times over the last ten years and now that I've recently retired, I'm wanting to take a week in the mountains enjoying the color and fall riding.
I'm trying to time my travels to coincide with the near peak to peak colors - doing so is a bit difficult from Michigan and the only eyes on I have available are various webcams on the internek. Resolution and color are not always the best....

Sooo, I'm wondering if any members that may live in the area can assist by suggesting timing. I live in Grand Rapids, Michigan and plan to ride to Lexington, KY on the first day and stay at the Sleep Inn at the Man 'O War exit off I-75. Hotel gives a 50% discount if you tell them you're going to the Harley Shop - which I do; I like their boot socks

Second day will end in Boone, NC and I'll head south from there for the remainder of my trip.

What dates would you choose to start a ride in the area to get the best color tour?
Bike is packed, serviced and ready to go.

Thanks for any help.

Walt

As of the last several days it is absolutely stunning in the lower half of VT & NH and all of western MA.  You can likely say the same for eastern NY State and CT w/in the next week or 2.  R3~

I live one hour south of the Blue Ridge Parkway on the SC side of the NC/SC border, just below Hendersonville, NC.  Our elevation is around 1100 ft. and some trees started displaying a small amount of autumn leaves a couple of days ago.  Every year is different so it's hard to nail it down.  When a lot of trees start changing at the same time, they will then change very quickly.  Once they've changed, they won't last very long until they start falling.  My best guesstimate is that if you start your trip somewhere around the 22nd of this month, you'll have the best chance of seeing the most color (but again, it's a crap shoot that changes from year to year).

Keep in mind that colors will peak at different times at different elevations. Here is a link to a map that should help.

Just came back from a fishing trip in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and there can't be a more spectacular color-ama than that anywhere.

Just starting to turn here in the ozarks, should be pretty colorful, we had plenty of rain  in the spring. End of October is usually a good time here too.

Better hurry, they're falling off the trees here.
