My first attempt at attaching photos here, so don't know if it will work or not.  Something I've done for many years is to always keep the first breakin oil filter off any new vehicle, motorcycle or engine I've  rebuilt myself.  I cut them open to see how much swarf, crud, etc. is imbedded in the pleats just to see what kind of hygiene the mfr., or me as the rebuilder, practiced during engine assembly.  These pictures are of the breakin oil filter off my '12 Norge. I had the dealer save it for me after the first service at 1165 miles and it had been laying around for a few days. I cut it open yesterday.  UFI filter and very rugged and well made.  No cheap plastic check valve or cardboard end pieces on the filter medium.  I imagine the numerous orange specks, and the blue ones, are some type of sealer used during assembly. Quite a few metal fragments. Didn't check them with a magnet. This is highly subjective, but of all the breakin filters I've opened, the only one dirtier than this was off a 4 cyl. continental engine that I rebuilt on my Massey Ferguson tractor.  So, I can't really condemn Luigi here very much.  :)  Just thought it might be of interest.  I imagine Pete Roper knows what the orange and blue specks are.

Interesting stuff here 56,
First off, all the swarf in yours looks pretty benign. I've worked on compressed air systems, hydraulic systems and automotive/bikes for nearly 40 years and religiously open any filter after the first service. In all that time I've only seen  2 or 3 that gave me any concern and only once was it a complete mechanical failure (factory left out bearing shim pack on a rotor) and all kinds of shiny glitter in that filter.  Those filters do a remakable job and it's hard to say what some of those pieces are without  an electron microscope.
Like you say probably bits of gasket, sealer, oil dry or Guidos lunch crumbs.

All you have to do is after you have it on Photobucket, tag the <IMG> under share links, it'll turn yellow and say copied. Paste that in your post.

No, Chuck, it's nothing that made me worry at all.  There were a few slivers of metal, small, but those pictures came out blurred.  Was just dirtier than most I'd opened, and thought it might be of interest.  Slow day here in the boonies.
