Breva V1100 erratic speedometer
« on: December 07, 2022, 08:39:14 AM »
New to me 2006 Breva V1100.  29k miles, runs like a doll, electrics flakier than Loretta Lynn's pie crust.

When I test rode and bought the bike all was well, then in the first 1k miles a lot of issues with the electrical/electronics.  Most things I've found threads with much info and I'm still digging in.

Topic for today - erratic speedometer.

The speedometer seems to spend 1/4th of the time not working at all, 1/4th of the time working properly, and 1/2 of the time bouncing wildly between 100 and 150 mph.  This morning Trip 1 insisted that my 35 mile ride to work was 51 miles.  Dash otherwise works normal.

Rear wheel sensor?  Clean a connector?  Scrap the bike?  Help please,,,

You got it, it's not analog. I would get a can of DeOxit and start w/all connectors to & from speedo and sensors. Get the pins in both female & male parts. 15ys of little wires making things work. Back of dash 1st. Get a wiring diagram so you don't miss any. Do ign switch & relays too.
Keep at it, you'll find the issue.

I suggest cleaning up the rear wheel sensor first, and then proceed with the preceding instructions if necessary.

ABS or non ABS bike?

If non ABS it's the same as my old V1100 and the speed sensor is on the front wheel.

Look at it sooner rather than later as if it is getting water in, (they crack) it can cause a short that blows a 3A fuse that feeds the ECU stopping the bike from running
Ask me how I know

Expect to pay £300 (don't know the US figure) for a replacement

It can be fixed with an industrial sensor from EBAY for about a tenth if that if you're a bit creative,
I'd have to hunt down what I did if you need it.

Good luck

Tris

PS.
If you're worried about the possible short, unplug the sensor, it's under the tank.
The bike will run but you'll have to guess how much you're breaking the speed limit by

As said the sensor is on the front for that bike.   Same senario happend to me this year.   Check to make sure the front wheel is mounted correctly, that is the rotation has to be correct, if it's on backwards speedo goes haywire, don't ask how I know. :embarrassed:
