Medical situation probably requiring change in hobbies
« on: September 22, 2022, 03:21:57 PM »
Medical emergency for me.  Some of you know I’m a cancer survivor but it left some damage to me years ago.  Anyways to make a long story short, more surgery probably coming with permanent 10 pound weight lifting restrictions and NO HEAVY MOTORCYCLE USE, according to medical experts.

Might mean I will have to sell my 2010 goldwing and 2013 Stelvio.  Time will tell, but Il be in market for smaller/lighter machine probably.  It’s hopefully not a life/death surgery so things could be worse.  Il know more next week.  Attitude is good!  That’s what counts

A maxi-scooter might work for you.  Step through with a 750 engine.

Best of luck with the surgery and the hunt. I’ve always liked the new Morgans but the Vanderhall looks much more finished and usable.    I think the four wheel version is very interesting.  It would be the ultimate outer beach toy.

Best of luck with your surgery.

Any bike when stopped will require more than 10 lbs of force to keep it upright should it start to lean.  Forget center stands, and even getting it off a side stand will take more force than you said would be your max.

Think seriously about the Vanderhall, and iirc, Iron Pony in Columbus, OH had another brand of similar vehicles.  There are also 3 wheelers - Canam - and the Slingshot.

Six years ago, I had to sell my two Stone Touring hydros, arguably the best bikes I ever owned in 65 years of riding (then) as I was 79 and weighed only 134#.   Just felt overwhelmed by them.  I downsized to smaller bikes including my '04 Breva 750 and so far I'm feeling up to that size bike.  If a smaller bike will keep you riding and competently so, go for it with my best wishes.

Bob, Have you considered triking your Goldwing? I have a 2008 GL 1800 Champion trike conversion, and its very easy to ride. You never have to worry about holding it up. Perfect for two up riding. In my case, the only way I can go 2 up.

Time to scale down if your heath issues continue. One reason I never sold my beloved sidecar rig. Haven't made the rally yet, wife had surgery Tues and I have to wait on her PLUS an impacted tooth. May still go on sidecar, but all the riders up my ass going up & down mtn is a real pain.

I stress out when riders are on my butt going up or down a mountain in the twisties etc. vi try to just let them pass and go the speed I’m comfortable with.

I would guess every bit of $10,000 for an actual trike kit. There is a Landing Gear? kit you can buy that drops bogey wheels out the bottom of the saddlebags at something like under 5pm. Of course they take up the saddlebag storage. Even then, maintaining a Wing through turns ‘may’ require over 10 pounds of force. Depending on speed. If you decide on a trike, you may be a LOT better off buying one someone else paid to have done.

Most importantly, take your time and consider your options well after surgery. You most certainly have an excellent attitude which means more than most people know.

All the best to you Bob. Prayers inbound for you sir.

I also have a '21 Royal Interceptor 650 (3K miles) and a 2017 Honda CB-500F (12K miles).  Both have Russell "Day Long" seats and upgraded suspension as OEM seats and suspenders were horrid.  The Enfield does very well, tho a little tall with the thick Russell seat and I've lightened it about 31# which makes it easier for me to handle at around 450#, topped off.  The Honda has benefitted from a little slimming to about 398# topped off and lowered 1.5" to a very pleasant (for me) seat height.  I am very at ease on this low, light bike and regard it as my long-term ride (as much as any 85 year old can envision "long term rides"). The Breva, especially, and Enfield have a clear amount of "soul", while the Honda is about as soulful as a toaster oven.  Still, they are all good bikes and for the present all are within my ability to handle them with confidence.
