Stelvio struggle, won't rev over 5000 rpm
« on: September 26, 2022, 03:29:07 AM »
Hi to everyone,
My name is Kristijan , I am a new owner of a 2011 Guzzi Stevio Ntx, small tank .
Engine has now 55000km and it is rollerized .
Yesterday when I was driving , the engine wont go over 5000rpm . If I open the throttle at that rpm motorcycle start to slow down ...
Till 4500-5000rpm everything seems fine, engine pulls nice , no struggle ...
Please help , where to start ?
Thanks .

Has this happened immediately after rollerisation?  If so it could mean that the cam timing is out?

Shooting in the dark here but if it happened after re-fuelling you may have got some dirty fuel that has partially blocked the fuel filter

I am a new owner, I have it about 10 days . This was my first ride on motorway with this Guzzi . The rollerization was done years before ...

I would remove seat and look at the air filter for blockage, then look at the drainage tube out the bottom for oil in the drain tube.
Could also be the valves have tightened up, pull covers & check valve gap.
Reset the TPS with software, should help. Do a basic tune-up.

Yep, a thorough tune up would be a good first step

Good info on Guzzidiag software here

https://wildguzzi.com/forum/index.php?topic=69168.450

I've been advised by someone with far greater knowledge than me that a motor running out of steam at 5,000rpm can be a symptom of not having been re-mapped following rollerisation, may be worth asking the previous owner if that was done

My first Stelvio acted that way upon receipt from dealer.  Turned out one of the cams was 2 teeth off.  It's an easy inspection through the little round covers on the back of each head.

Make sure the rev limiter was raised after break-in. Guzzi says "full performance can not be reached until after the run-in service." The PO may have not had this done. I don't know if the 2011 had this, but run through the menus on the dash or read the owner's manual. When I bought mine, the fun stopped at 6200 rpm. Edit- now that I think about it, I don't remember if it shut down or jst started flashing yellow lights and scared the shit out of me and I shut it down. Either way, there is a way to raise the redline warning, and perhaps the cut-off, but I can't  confirm that now.

So, in looking back over the Stelvio thread in Advrider forum, the cut off at 5,000rpm doesn't quite gel with the cam timing being out as that apparently happens around 6,000rpm and the motor doesn't slow, see below

https://www.advrider.com/f/threads/moto-guzzi-stelvio-merged-threadfest.113158/page-2397#post-41000232

I reckon guzzisteve might be in the money, maybe you've had a mouse nest in the airbox?

My 2 cents, 1 Fuel filter or 2 tank vent / tip valve,  try running with the cap open to rule out #2

I would also want to verify TPS function with guzzi diag or the likes

Let us know how you get on with this.....

I can recommend that you join in the Stelvio forum on Advrider, there are many on there who know the Stelvio and all its associated idiosyncrasies in intimate detail...... and it's a friendly and diverse group of like minded people  :thumb:

I'd check over what is said above, but had a similar issue on a new to me Norge. The Right side cams were off by 1 tooth. Bike ran fine and rev'd to 6K then went flat. Was an easy fix but took forever to find as it was a low mileage bike (800 miles) so we assumed it was mechanically straight. It was a 2014 so came rollerized from the factory, but was still off.

Good Luck!

Hi,
I have some news ... I have started with valves and they are tighten to much IN about 0.03mm , EX about 0.06mm . I also run into a problem that 2 adjustment nuts can't be tightened it seems that the thread in those 2 nuts are bad .
That nuts are M6x0.75mm ?
Also what is the recommended gaps between the valves, in 0.10mm or 0.15mm and ex 0.15mm or 0.20mm ?
My engine number starts with AC with rollers, small tank

It's 0.1mm intake and 0.15mm exhaust

Sounds like some heavy handed work has been done that's for sure
I suggest that you get hold of a couple of new adjuster screws and locknuts, also check that the thread in the rocker arm is undamaged, although I reckon that it would be unlikely to be damaged.  Someone with more knowledge than me in regard to this problem might like to add to this.......

Yes, there are 2 different adjusters on 8V motors. Early & later. Have different threads also so don't mix them up.

As far as I can see from spare parts catalogue the part number for valve screw adjuster is 879707 and it is the same for older and newer engine... so the thread must be same or not ?  https://www.stein-dinse.biz/product_info.php?products_id=178981#prettyPhoto

This is the nut  https://www.stein-dinse.biz/product_info.php?products_id=162878
Screw is PN 879707 and is the same in old and new engine parts catalogue .
On this stein-dinse site the nut is M6x0.75mm and the screw is M6x0.5mm . Is it a mistake or what... I am confused ?!

Two different thread pitch & I don't know which was which but I did write the numbers down, one nut was same as a smallblock

Hi, finally I have some update...
I was waiting for valve adjuster screws and nuts 4 weeks. After I got them I adjust the valves , do a throttle bodies balancing , TPS reset.
After that go to test ride and more or less the Guzzi struggles the same way . After test ride I connect the GuzziDiag and from failures I read this P0352 Coil right : to high . Maybe my trouble is with coil and I need a replacement ? From bad coil can motorcycle struggle like I described earlier ?

thanks.

Although I am no expert I believe a bad coil could be your problem. Have heard of coils causing problems when they get hot - after a longer ride.
Others with more knowledge should be along shortly...
EDIT: Also makes sense (to me) that a bad coil would act up at higher RPM because it can't keep up with higher engine RPM...  :undecided:

Swap them L to R and see if issue follows the indicated bad one. Clean wiring plugs also, clean pin connectors.
