V7/850 final drive leak
« on: September 27, 2022, 08:40:21 AM »
A friend & I met for breakfast last Sunday, he’s just purchased a V7/850 ,his first Guzzi and was letting me admire his taste in bikes . After breakfast we went our separate ways . I soon get an e-mail telling me when he got home the rear wheel was awash in gear oil ! The bike has just about 1k Mi. And is soon to get it’s first service. Both fill & drain plugs are secure . Any one else had a similar issue ? Breakfast trip was about 140 Mi. & no prior leaks . Thanks in advance for any positive feedback.

Odds are it's too full. 5.6 Oz max. 6 oz spits out.

If the breather bolt gets plugged then oil will be forced out when the drive heats up.  But if the rear wheel is "awash w oil" then it's sounds like a more serious problem.

At 947 miles my 2021 V7 850 is leaking oil from the left rear shock. In 40 years of riding, never had a shock blow out. A new unit has been ordered under warranty. KYB shock - a standard of the industry. Have him check the shocks - one of them may blown out and covered the wheel with oil.

Yes!  That was the case with my bike, exactly.  Right shock started leaking and covered the rear wheel in oil.  I was gloom and doom, certain I had a final drive leak until someone suggested a close look at the shocks.  Numerous reports of leaking shocks on these bikes, I reckon.

But it's possible the final drive has been overfilled from the factory.  Per the service manual, 160 ml is the proper refill quantity on the V7 850.

Good luck, and let us know what your buddy finds.

I would have thought that if the factory had over-filled the oil it would have leaked sooner.

Same, but maybe this was a first extended drive, possibly allowing some atmospheric involvement.

I’m curious if there may be some moisture inside. Any chance the owner left his bike sit out for periods of atmospheric change? Dog knows it’s happened to my shelterless goose more than once.

My V7III final drive leaked. It was overfilled like many others.  Drain and re-fill with 5.6 ounces fixed it.
