Time for making wine…
« on: September 29, 2022, 03:00:33 PM »
For all the things that did & didn’t go as planned this summer, it sure has been a great year for grapes around here.  We picked over 25 gallons of muscadines and scuffadines this afternoon.  There’s still at least 10-15 gallons of muscadines on the vine that aren’t ready.  If we hit all the vines hard when they were ready instead of just picking the easy vines that are trellised, I bet we could have nearly double the grapes.

Time to make wine.  Might even finally make the grappa for the studio that’s always been the bigger goal of the vineyard.

How has the grape harvest been for other wine-making WG folks?

This is really neat. How long does this process take?

Sigh. It's been a very tough year for grapes in southern Tuscany. So very hot and dry for most of the summer. Animals seeking liquids stripped many vineyards- ours has better fencing than most but we still suffered daily losses and others were stripped completely bare. And then the rains came. We had hoped to harvest first week of October, but between the predation losses and the rains, the collective wisdom amongst the winemakers in our village was to harvest NOW. That was last week and I was in the US to see my first grandchild (!), so my wife had to do the harvest (a neighbor helped) and do the first production stages on her own. The grapes are now fermenting (we do all natural fermentation) and another neighbor is stirring them twice a day as we are in Germany for a memorial service. We'll be back on Monday and will press the grapes on Tuesday. Not an optimal year, but part of the mystery is that every year is different. Below is a photo of this year's harvest just before unloading at the cantina

Just got back from Napa...
I won't be making any this year, garage frige is limited...

Nothing much better than a Tannat from the Salta region.
