True Detective
« on: January 15, 2019, 02:14:48 PM »
I just saw the first episode.  The murder takes place in Devil's Den.  Many references to NW  Ark and East OK in it.

It looks like they filmed it in the area.  Thought some of the Okie Rally types might interested.

It was so intense that I'll have to watch the second episode tomorrow.  I think the dialog among the detectives, future love interest and  the community is spot on.  I hope the story doesn't devolve like the first two series did.

HBO.

There were two previous seasons with individual stories, all separate time and location with different actors.   I thought this was the best opening, not just because it was in the area but also because the two groups of suspects hint at real murders that have happened in the general geographical area as well as the worldview and circumstances of the characters.  It's setting in 1980, 1990 and 2015.  The same actor Mahershala Ali, the black detective, playing the character as he aged.

I would say it was early spring or winter.  But it was apparent that it was actually filmed there.

Cha Cha and I are going to start the show soon.  Didn’t see the first two seasons, but doesn’t matter for this one as each season is it’s own thing.   Looking forward to it

The First Season was great, second season not so good and so far the 3rd season is pretty good.
Season one was loosely based on real incidents around Lake Charles. A Devil cult did a few gruesome murders/sacrifices with a jumbo simpleton as a key figure, all detailed in a book "Axes of evil".

First season with Woody and Mathew was really good. Season 2 was good but not as good as 1. Haven't seen any of three yet, but I have HBO so I can watch it at my leisure on demand.

You're correct.  I mis-spoke.  Late Winter into Spring.

Of interesting note, the creator, Nic Pizzolatto, went to school here at The University of Arkansas.

Here's a link to filming locations:  https://www.4029tv.com/article/true-detective-season-3-mahershala-ali-filming-locations/25608045

planning to unplug from HBO, but waited an extra week so I could catch this. I thought it was excellent. Ali is an exceptional talent, and with the budget HBO has, the makeup, on what otherwise is just straight up live location stuff is AMAZING. This guys transformation between the three time frames is flawless, and when you consider that as an actor, he had to shift mentally during a short filming time frame, it's really impressive.

And my unplugging is not political or anything else. Just less is more....less screen time, more money and mental time for other things. I'm ditching cable, and HBO is 15 mo as an a la carte option. Few hours entertainment just isn't worth it. My dog, guitars, bike and Girlfriend will all benefit.

I sound convincing don't I??

The first season was riveting, intelligent, television; the second got such bad reviews I steered clear. It's a problem with lightning striking twice, etc.

I saw the 2nd episode and so far, consider this show to be better than the previous two series.  The dialog and interplay between Hayes, his partner, future and past wife, and his son are just outstanding.  The plot, we'll see.

The problem with the first series was they started interesting but turned incoherent with had messy plots.  The critics say that this one turns into a mess as well.  But so far I like it much better than the others.  The flashback narrative seems to work much better.  Also, setting it in Ark and Okla draws my interest as well.  I think they captured the environment.

cancelling an entire network with the best on demand service & back catalogue of some of the best original shows & documentaries ever produced because I don't like one personality who has 1hr/week show for 5mo/year lol

enjoy your indignation, we'll be watching Sopranos, Deadwood, and The Wire

Actually, you have to realize that just because someone doesn't have the same "tube viewing" taste as you do, that doesn't make them worthy of name-calling.

Sometimes people have different opinions, you know.   My opinion is that any company that would pay money to someone like Bill Maher is not a company that I would send any money to.

And I've seen (in motel rooms) some of "The Sopranos", the TV version of "Deadwood", and "The Wire", and it looks like crap to me.

So enjoy it, but don't be shocked if other people don't ....

Season 1 is probably in my top 5 of greatest television series ever.  By greatest I merely mean in terms of quality, enjoyment, writing, acting, etc.  For reference, number one on that list and will likely never be toppled from it is Breaking Bad.  Ozarks might even be in there somewhere or at least in the top 8 or so.  Season 2 of TD was a mess, still better in general than most of what is on television, but still a mess.  So far, IMO season 3 seems back on track though it’s nowhere near that previously mentioned top five.  I love that it is back to great acting, solid story, etc. and not the ridiculousness of season 2.  The lead guy is awesome and truly phenomenal in the movie Moonlight.  That guy is a great actor.  And too, I can’t get over how much I’m enjoying Stephen Dorff.  Sort of like Ben Affleck, I always start off not wanting to like the guy in whatever he’s in, but somehow wind up enjoying his performance.  I think Dorff is doing a great job in this.
