What's your favorite cover song?
« on: May 07, 2021, 09:12:21 PM »
Im not talking about "best" or Grammy winning- even if it is- but what's your favorite cover version of a song?  There's a lot of music-oriented folks here and it's great to know what different people like and why.

Stevie Ray Vaughn's cover of Voodo Chile on Austin City Limits is awesome and has been my favorite for a long time, but I think my favorite one is this cover of Tom Petty's "Southern Accent" by The Steel Woods- ]https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=7TNZyBPai5Q/]It's such a great and honest personal interpretation of a good song.

I almost always prefer an original to a cover but there are exceptions.

Ray Wylie Hubbard is a stellar songwriter, absolutely fantastic BUT he does a terrific cover of James McMurtry's Choctaw Bingo.

That's easy..Pretty Boy Floyd by Bob Dylan, (1980) best vocal performance I've heard Bob do.
From "Folkways a vision shared a tribute to a woods Guthrie and Ledbelly" the whole album is great.
You can find it on Spotify but there's no YouTube of this version, there's a lousy live version when BD was in Norway.

And second , Johnny Winter doing Highway 61 Revisited, i favor his version over the Hendrix cut.

I thought Commander Cody wrote the song, but I just looked it up and it is quite a bit older.  I like (especially on road trips) Bill Kirchen's (live) version of 'Hot Rod Lincoln'.  It is a lot of fun.

But- "favorite" is going to depend on the day and the hour.  I have a lot of favorite everything.

Favorite??? But right now this one comes to mind. Bonnie Raitt's cover cover of Angel from Montgomery, by John Prine. Susan Tedeschi also does a fine rendition.

There have been many great covers over the journey including Blue Suede shoes by Elvis, Sorrow by Bowie, One by Cash, Nothing Compares to You by Sinead O'Connor.  I love a good cover.  Doesn't mean I don't like the original.  In Oz we have a radio station called JJJ and for the last 35 years, every Friday, they invite the latest young cool bands to come in and do a cover version.  There have been some absolute spankers done and they release an album of the songs each year.  For example a young band called DMA's did Cher's 'I believe" and it blew everyone away.  Recently someone did a version of a Taylor Swift song (whom I would never listen to) and it was a cracker.

Jimi's cover of All Along the Watchtower.

But then,  Manfred Mann's cover of Blinded by the Light.

How do I decide.  So many good ones.  Yes's cover of America.

I give up.

A cover that should be considered is CCRs version of Heard It Through The Grapevine. Taking a classic smooth soul song and turning it into their own guitar driven rock classic was pure genius.

That is indeed tough as there are many great covers of songs that were already barnburners in their original versions .
Two come to mind:
1) Statesboro Blues by Willie McTell . Great covers by both  the Allman Bros Band and  John Hammond on his first album.
2) instrumental version of Sweet dreams by Roy Buchanan.

I think SRV could cover just about anything as well, if not better than original. I really like his take on "Little Wing" & "Chitlins Con Carne".
Other favs are: Nirvana's cover of Bowies "The Man who sold the World"
Cake's cover of "Never Gonna Give You Up"

The Twangbangers' version of "Hot Rod Lincoln".  When they are passing cars going up Grapevine hill, they reference a different music icon pulling over to let them by.  From Pee Wee King, to Elvis, to Johnny Cash, and on and on.  Every band the singer mentions, his band tries to play a few bars that are representative of the music the bands made famous.  Its a fun tribute to the past.
