The engine appears to be a clone of the Yamaha 250 Virago/SRV250 powerplant.

Actually that motor looks a lot like the VT 250 Honda from the 80's

That was liquid-cooled, DOHC and had a wider V angle, this is air-cooled, SOHC.

Compare the cylinders and heads of the Yamaha and SRV - they look identical:

Yamaha SRV250:

SSR 250:

The Virago is the same, it just has stamped steel covers over the heads.

It looks nice, but it's lacking in power.  It's maybe 30 lbs lighter than my Ninja 250, with about 1/2 the horsepower.

Even the Morini 250 2C (pushrod, air-cooled, Heron head, carburetted) had 24 hp and weighed slightly less.

The VT250 engine was a 90 degree V-twin.

This engine was also used in the 1988-1990 VTR250, and produced 35 HP @ 12,000 RPM, double that of the SSR air cooled unit.

Yes...it's a Chinese-made ItalJet. Being imported by SSR...the same folks who are bringing the new line of Benelli. I've looked at all of them in the flesh, and they're quite tasty! I asked them why they didn't retain the ItalJet name...and the answer was, that they want to create SSR awareness.

I can't give you a seat of pants feel, as I have not ridden one.  But seat of the pants is just that.

From my perspective, and understanding, there is almost no chance that a stock early 80s (I think) pushrod, air-cooled, Heron head, carbureted could possibly produce 24hp.  Modern liquid cooled motors produce power in that area, you can say what you want, but I don't buy it.

Modern liquid cooled motors produce power in that area, you can say what you want, but I don't buy it.

Again, my Ninja 250, a liquid cooled, reasonably modern motorcycle, is rated at 36 crankshaft HP and 26 RWHP.  It's not hard for me to imagine a pushrod air cooled 250 producing 24 HP at the crankshaft.
