Title: Le Mans III exhaust on a Le Mans 1000 - will it fit?
Post by: Antietam Classic Cycle on April 23, 2015, 11:33:55 AM
Exploring my exhaust options for the Le Mans 1000. Anyone tried this?

When I had my MKIV all information I got was that the exhaust for the IV and V was not directly compatible with any other Tonti. I suspect you could get other parts to work but not without some modification. Since the IV is the longer frame, you might have better luck with parts from a later model.

I had stock pipes on mine and one had some damage when I got it. I had it repaired and then had all the parts ceramic coated black. Came out very nice. Didn't have the same metalic black look as the stock cones but that may be available now.

Different header sizes I think Charlie but I could be wrong.

New headpipes from MG Cycle, S-D and elsewhere are listed as fitting Le Mans III and LM 1000, crossover is not however. Different length crossover? I have a III and "Mk5" here right now, will have to do some measuring...

MkIII used just an 'H' pipe crossover, the MkIV/V used the early 'Collostomy Bag' type with the curved internal pipes into the collector.

Yep, I know that (bought a LM 1000 new in '86 and cussed the "Collostomy Bag" at every trans. oil change), just wonder what the difference is dimensionally.

the Lemans IV had the taller steering neck.
the Lemans IV had the rear frame rails bent up behind the shocks
they both had long swingarms, the Lemans III had the early smaller diameter, and 2.15" rear wheel
the IV had the fat tubing dimpled for the wider rear rim/tire.

none of this affects the exhaust.

They did have different foot peg hangers, but I know the Lemans III muffler had removable muffler hangers. I'm pretty sure the head pipes and cross over will work. You might have to fabricate a different muffler hanger at worst. .

I've done mix-n-match of exhaust components between long and short tonti frames. (not lemans).  I think the biggest challenge was the xover to muffler fit.  In one case to make Bubs fit I had to use a long, simple H-pipe and shrink on some sleeves to mate the smaller diameter of the h-pipe to the muffler.

I agree that the frame length doesn't happen in the exhaust area IF YOU ARE RUNNING UPSWEPT MUFFLERS.  If you want to run them under touring bags the 3" longer frame tail makes for interesting geometry problems.

I got that, but I thought I'd toss in the caveat for folks following the thread that might not have.   :)

Did some measuring today. The Le Mans 1000 crossover is approx. 1.5" longer, so it doesn't look like the Le Mans III part will work properly.

Longer at the clamp surface or longer to the very end?

Well, you beat me to it, Charlie. I've BTDT. You need a LM 1000 xover. The other will make the head pipes hit the frame.

Longer from the front edge to the "clamp surface" for the mufflers.

So wider as well? I didn't measure that. In the description on MG Cycle it does say "slight upward and outward angle to fit these models with medium length and wide swingarms".

Yep. Gordon and Cheeshead worked with me on the Strada crossover. Ended up with the LM1000 being the only one that would fit.

I've got T3 headlines and crossover on the Lemans IV powered sidecar. The mufflers are LeMans 1 Bubs. I cut and swept up the rear foot rests. When I ordered the Bubs, I got them unfinished without mounting brackets attached. That way I could weld the brackets on where I wanted them. That was 20 years ago when Denis was answering the phone himself.

I just bought a 1985 Lemans IV, previous owner had a Bub exhaust and the larger oil pan with external filter. Bub's are not in great shape, he provided the original exhaust system which is in pretty good shape (needs re-coating) so I was thinking of putting back the original. Does anyone know if the larger oil pan will fit with the original exhaust system-especially with that larger crossover?
