NICE! They are gonna sell a ton of them! Wondering, with the 54" bed, if you open the gate, can you fit a bike in the back diagonally?

Depends on the bike wheelbase. There is a you tuber with the same model who carries his big dirt bike diagonally in the back on long trips cross country. I think my RE 650 will fit, but I would have issues getting it up there. Once I get it home I'll start measuring and looking at customizing and existing ramp to allow me to walk the bike up into the bed. Also, I may just carry the bike in a sideways rack in the trailer hitch. They are OK if your bike is under 500#.

Does it have enough of a tow rate to pull a single axel closed in trailer with a bike or two?

Seriously?

What's the tow rating on that? You're not basing that on 5000# so a 500# tongue weight? (Edit- looks like 4k# is max on the Maverick according to the Google).

I say this because a hitch carrier adds a few things to the equation.

* The carrier itself tends to be pretty heavy, around #100 so that adds a lot of tongue weight
* The carrier holds the weight further away from the hitch than a ball receiver, therefore the lever effect makes it effectively a heavier tongue weight.

Not sure if you saw my Ducati on a Land Rover thread this summer. The Duc is only 400# wet, the carrier about 100#, but the tow rating is ~8200# with a tongue weight max of 771#. It's got an air suspension and the 5k# vehicle has a 7k# GVWR so it didn't notice it back there.

But the same might not be true if you're already over the weight rating on a coil spring vehicle that weighs a good 1k# less in the first place and is rated for about half that weight total.

I would NOT put a 500lb bike on a hitch carrier. I have one for my trials bikes but the heaviest one is about 210lbs with gas, and that is enough. A 500lb bike in a carrier, besides being VERY iffy strength wise, will also have the Maverick riding nose up pretty badly me thinks.

"For short bed trucks if rear wheel of the bike sits on the tailgate, I simply flip on of my 6-foot steel ramps upside down and put it in the bed of the truck to act as a track for the bikes wheels to rest it. It takes a lot of the stress off the tailgate and no need to try and jack the bike sideways in the bed to get the tailgate closed."

That is a REALLY good idea and I am glad you thought of it since I wouldn't have. Dumb question but how do you get the bike onto the upside down ramp after you roll it up into the bed? In the case of the Maverick or Sante Cruz, the 6' steel ramps would be sticking out a bit from the tailgate so I don't see how one could roll the bike directly up onto the upside down ramp.

Hi Sidecar,                                                                                                    1-1-21

A real beauty!

Be well, stay well,

P.S.  A Guzzi sticker in the rear window would finish it off nicely.

Probably not helpful but-- I use my bike lift to load bikes.  Pull the lift outside of the garage, of course.

Strap the front end of the ramp down to the bed and roll it up using another ramp. At least that's what I did with my Baja. You do have to be mindful of the tailgate rating my Baja was rated for 666# static load though so I was fine with smaller bikes.

Nice looking car. Congratulations!

If only they made a ext. cab long bed I might have a future interest.

I guess this is the new market of open bed SUVs.

Side note...no coil springs...I believe its torsion bar style.

Noted, thanks.

Though same point on limitations and automatic adjustment.

But now you've got me wondering how much adjustment is manually possible and if it wouldn't be enough to make carrying a bike feasible off a hitch carrier. Though I still isn't to think it's too past spec.

Last edit really -

Looks like it has different rear suspensions based on whether or not it's FWD or AWD. Some are a type of coil spring.

Mine has the FX4 and 4k tow package so it as optimized for hauling as a maverick can be made to be.

A channel on the bed to hold the tires is a great idea. I have done that on some trailers in the past too. I may just get a small landscape trailer to haul the bike or the lawn tractor.
The RE weighs 450lb with luggage and gas. My hitch carrier is a steel one rated for 500 lb. I used to carry my old RE 500 on it to the mountains. It weighed almost as much.
There are many ways to get the job done. Want to live it for a bit first, get to know it better and then figure out the best solution. It'll be a week or two before I can pick it up, so plenty of time to think it over. It does have a open safety recall on the rear seat belts. That needs fixed.

Nice vehicle! The new Maverick would be a good replacement for my 2009 Ranger 4x4 extended cab for what I need a truck for. Provided the Maverick can pull a light utility trailer with a couple motorcycles on it I think it would be perfect. The new Ranger is nice but given the short box length I think the Maverick could be just as good to me. I hope Ford sells as many as they can build

I do wonder how the Ford Maverick fans are thinking about the repurposing of the name.  There are several Mavericks on the road around me because there is a who specializes in them and the sister Mercury.

I always thought the old Maverick was a cool car. Like a smaller version of the Fairlane.
Tom Cruise?? If the maverick was in production in 1989, he wouldn't have needed that 900 Ninja to be cool!

Looks like the liftgate is rated for 500lbs, which makes it just a bit iffy in my book for laying out an upside down ramp and loading my V7 (or Royal Enfield 500) that way. Knowing me I would want to ride the bike up..........just like riding trials! And that is more like 700lbs so not a good idea for me. Thinking that a Maverick, or Santa Cruz, might be an ideal retirement vehicle for me in a few years, for when I lose my company provided SUV. That and a Honda Trail 125, which I could easily load into the truck bed!

I can't get too enthused about the old Mavericks. Time tempers memories to the good side. I owned 2 and worked on some others. Every one of them was a rattletrap that felt like they had 300K on them if you hit a bump.

I don't know if it will work with the Maverick-  but I took the gate off my Tacoma and added some 1/2" L inside (bolted across the lift gate) to stiffen it up.  I don't know that I've put 700# on it (I know I haven't), but it helped some.

Congrats! Is a great looking truck, and Ford got this right. They will sell a ton of these. Did you decide against the hybrid version? (Or was that someone else?)

For that vehicle, I'd go with small utility trailer, you can tow 2 bikes on a light trailer. Easy peasy.

I've never been a fan of bikes in a truck bed unless I put them in on a loading dock 😉. My current truck is too tall. The idea gives me the willies.
