OH and yes, professional photo shoot is worth it, especially for something this nice!  Put a RESERVE on the listing!

I’ve sold two bikes on BaT - a 1961 Matchless and a 1980 v50ii.  I was not a reserve person, but then the v50 sold for short money to a clueless buyer.  I wouldn’t sell without a reserve again. I do like BaT as a seller service. I think your loop will do well Chad.

I sold a small trail bike without reserve on BaT, but it was a bike in which I’d invested under $1K.  So I thought it would be an interesting experiment and that I’d likely not lose any money.  It sold for over $4K even factoring in the sellers payment to BaT, and since that was more than it would sell for in other convenient venues, I was quite happy.  I have a low mileage Ducati 996 that I’ve thought about selling, and pondered whether to do the same with that bike… but I think the 996’s ‘time’ is not quite with us yet, and I like owning the bike even if I don’t really ride it.  Whether I’d sell it with no reserve would depend on how hot I thought the market for that particular bike would be at the time of sale.

Well me and the loop had a big day on May 9th. I am not tech-savy so I found a gound whippersnapper on Reddit who films and edits a bunch of gopro action sports stuff. He mainly does downhill longboarding videos with his crew of insane Gen Z'ers who ride longboard (them are long skateboards) down the various roads and mountains around here.  Thomas came over and we shot a narrated walk-around video of the bike, a cold start video, and he strapped me up with a go-pro and edited together some footage of me riding the bike around my neighborhood

Here's the riding video
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_e9w5SVaRac&t=39s

Later the same day, I rode down to the River Arts District to meet the photog that BAT had assigned to me, nice young lady named Virginia. She took about 200 pictures of everything from the keyring to the inside of the gas tank. The photo service BAT uses (Snappr) had the photos re-touched, forwarded them to BAT, and sent me a link to view them within 2 biz days.

Afterward me and the wife had double cheeseburgers and rode home chatting about how much we will miss the Ambo.

By the 11th, I have been assigned an 'Auction Specialist' named Chris. He will actually write the ad and guide thru the remainder of the process. I've just emailed him a detailed breakdown of everything done to the bike, what parts are new/refurbished/etc.  I suspect we will be in contact over the next few days as we answer questions back and forth and we complete the listing.

I hope so! I am deff sweating the stock market and all this recession talk. Just hoping BAT buyers are insulated from that a fair bit- which seems to be the case. I will likely transition from a 'no reserve' to a reserve price auction as we move along for exactly that reason

Finally a little update...

After the photoshoot on 5/9 I got an email within a few days that the pics were edited & posted. I review the pics and approved. The 'auction concierge' sent me a list of questions, and I answered them all and added additional info about the bike and modifications/upgrades.

I didn't hear anything for a couple weeks...  On 6/1 I got an email saying they have completed the listing and are ready for my approval- they say once I approve the auction will go live in about 48hrs (I assume they have some algorithm that tells them the best day/time to start/end the auction)

One major change I want to make is switching from a 'no reserve' auction to placing a reserve price on the bike. I just feel with the current economic climate, I am worried some bidders may be a little gun-shy as we see what this market and inflation are going to do...  So we will see if that request slows things down for me.  I just love this bike too much to let it go cheap! I am hoping the sale will recoup my money with enough left over to (seed) finance the next project (code word: AMBORAT)

After reading the listing thru a couple times, I just wanted to make a few tweaks.  I sent the the corrections/tweaks early AM on 6/2.

SO, holding pattern for now but hopefully the bike will be live on BAT by next week!

Not looking like it. I approved the listing, but now they are saying I cant have a reserve... "Your vehicle was accepted and approved on condition as a no-reserve auction and cant be changed to a reserve price auction"

I guess a bike not hitting reserve is a major deal for them. If you think about it, a no-sale for failure to hit reserve would be terrible for them. They have worked many man hours on my auction and would only net $99 listing feeif the bike didnt sell.

Oh well, the process rolls on.....  Lets see how quickly it goes live at this point.

Well, I’m surprised that they would not at least entertain the number that you have in mind, and possibly “negotiate“ from there.

IMO, it’s a two way street. Yes, they might end up with just $99., but they also make a lot more on some of their six and 7 figure sales. You, on the other hand, could take a bad haircut, say if your auction ends on a day when the stock market drops 15 or 20 %.

I guess the lesson when dealing with BAT is to let them know from the beginning that you want to set a reserve.

As an auctioneer, you learn many people want to sell an item no matter what (aka no reserve) & then get nervous about whether it will bring enough money.  So they want to change terms and place a reserve on the item(s).  Fees & charges are generally different between no reserve vs reserve to reflect the likely compensation vs outcome.   Some sellers are honest and rational about the reserve amount, so it's not a significant impairment to the sale. Others simply decide they don't want to sell, so they place a top-of-market or higher reserve so the item won't sell but it will still get full advertising exposure.  The latter often allows them to defeat an auction sale of an item because someone commits to buy it for a specific price, maybe even one that's higher than the likely auction result.  So the auction company risks getting played if they let a seller change terms mid process.

This whole scenario is particularly bad in estate sales with consequential items and 1-2 members of the family who don't agree and want to start placing reserves on selected items after contracts are signed..  We managed this  situation by having the family members with concerns bid on the item, buy it and pay for it like any other customer.  We charged them the agreed fees and distributed the proceeds as contract stipulated.  Because it's a fully completed transaction,  it's an honest & legal auction.  The family could do what they wanted with the proceeds from the auction, including giving all the money for that item back to family member who bought it at fair market value over all other bidders..

Unless BaT contract specifically does not allow you to buy (not just bid, but buy and pay in full if you have the highest winning bid) your own item, it's not illegal or improper in any way to fund a friend to do it for you.  You'll just have to front the money, pay BaT in full when/if you win, pay related fees to BaT and then wait for whats left of your money to come back to you.   It's not as easy & maybe not as cheap as doing a reserve auction in the first place, but it's one way to make sure your $10K item doesn't sell for $5K if you don't want it to sell that cheap.

But it wouldn't surprise me if BaT has stipulation in their contracts stating such action would disqualify the item from being sold again by the same seller on BaT in the future.  Cycling items like this to artificially pump prices & perceived values is a very real strategy, especially with traveling sales before the internet.

I don't think BAT allows one to bid on one's own auction.

That said, I think this particular bike will go for $10K or, maybe a little bit more.
It's all shiny and better than new looking, and someone who
wants something to show off will buy it. In this case having no
reserve is not, I think, going to be a factor in getting decent money.
Many, many of the bidders on BAT are EXTREMELY well-heeled, and
will buy it if they want it. $10K is as a cup of coffee to these people.

Now, if the seller wants $25K or $30K, then I think he'll be disappointed.

My 2 cents........

The very best of luck with the auction - it's a beautiful machine.

What's the starting price? If the start price is the same as what you'd have had as a reserve, it would be a moot point. I can't remember if they start at zero or if it depends on the item.

Just reviewed your listing... impressive build and great presentation. I recently became infatuated with these after seeing GuzziSteve's V700 a few months ago and saw Charlie's when I was in his shop. Love the single instrument console and cowling, headlight... pretty much everything. Perhaps I missed it but did you rebuild the engine yourself, Cycle Garden? I'd love to restore one some day... your bike would be a great reference. GLWA!

It's live boys!

https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1970-moto-guzzi-ambassador-750-5/

ps. I would have set the reserve to $12k if I was able...  Not because I think that's what it is worth, but because if it doesnt bring that number I would just as soon keep it for myself.  But we will see how it goes. it got two bids all the way up to $6,600 in the first 15min, so I think it's going to be ok! The last loop in similar condition sold for $14k and although it was a killer restoration, I think mine presents better. Not to take anything away from the black one.. I just think the white colorway and the tractor seat look marvelous!

Clint, thanks for the insight on auction particulars...  I gotta hear you call an auction someday  :clock:

Wow, that came to life quickly. BAT probably felt your reservations and wanted to get it live asap.

That is one very tasty looking motorcycle  :thumb:

I like all the details in the listing; looking at all those receipts is painful  but any buyer that's seriously in the game with a thick wallet, will appreciate just how expensive it is to get a bike finished up to this level.

Great attention to the small fine details that make for a great restoration. It's obvious that you made decisions through the build, guided by what was best for the bike, not necessarily your wallet.

Glad to see you jump in with details as an engaged owner, builder, seller. Sets a good tone for the auction

Curious about the "Greg Bender luggage rack". I wasn't aware that Greg sold one.

This was purchased by the PO, who started the restoration...  He got it from Greg... It is different from the Harpers one (crossbars lack holes). It's also a new part with fresh powdercoating. It's not on this old tractor currently, but the PO started the restoration in 2016, so I just assumed Greg did a limited run, had them built to spec, and it was sold out/NLA.

I will have to double-check the receipts, but I am sure I saw it among the bills for the wiring harness and relays...

All auction at BAT start at zero...  there is a little tradition I guess you could call it, usually someone will bid a starting price of the vehicle's model year as the first bid just to get the ball rolling..  ie: Bid $1970.00 for a 1970 bike..  That didnt happen in this case, someone bid like $150 within minutes of the listing going live

Thank you! I can't claim all credit for that, the PO who began the restoration- he bought all the parts and that set the tone for the build. I actually have over $20k in receipts for parts + labor on this bike. I bought it as a roller with all the parts (almost) and my contribution was mostly putting it together and making everything fit-- then timing tuning and testing/fettling. I am very fortunate that the PO did such a through (and expensive) job of research and sourcing stuff. ...And I have a very good local Guzzi mechanic who is a loopframe expert to help when I got stuck!

That is the primary reason I am selling it- I would not have finished it to this amazing level if I had started from scratch. The bike I bought to replace this is more of a battle-axe beater/rider (LeMans CX100). This thing is a shiny show bike. As much as I love riding it, it is probably 'over restored' for my taste. I am hoping I make enough on the sale to turn my 'extra' ambo (parts bike) into a rider that I dont have to hide from the rain, detail everytime I ride it, keep polished and waxed, etc.....

Currently at $8000 with about 72 hours to go. Five bidders, and two seem to be serious.

Comments are a little thin. I’ve noticed that there is some correlation between a high number of auction comments, and a decent final bid.

Hopefully it will hit 5 figures  soon.

Your Ambassador is the nicest example I have seen!!
It’s just perfect and the attention to detail is stunning. I think it should break $15K IMHO and would be worth every penny.
It’s got to be hard to let this beautiful bike go but hopefully the new owner will look after it.
Best of luck with the results
