Title: 48 days after surgery...first RIDE on..."The Yellow Horse!!!"
Post by: JJ on May 15, 2018, 06:28:59 AM
To repair a complete Distal Biceps Rupture of my left arm...which I did a few weeks ago moving a heavy bed... This complete tear of the tendon was verified last week through an MRI.   NOTE:  If I do not get it done NOW, I will miss the window of opportunity to get it repaired permanently.

Just my luck at age 63....No riding for me for 4-6 months....That's nice...

Take the 'no riding' admonition with a dose of salt JJ. I rode my Quota around the block 4 weeks after triple bypass (OK, I'll admit that was a bit daft), but was fully back on the bike within a couple of months.  Let your body and mind by your guide.

And good luck - all will be well.

Modern medicine being what it is, I would **think** this ought to be somewhat routine for surgeons these days. I hope all goes well and you heal quickly.

JJ- the good news is you will miss the hot weather riding in Arizona - depends where you live. The higher elevations are pleasant in the summer and cold in the winter, but that Valley of the Sunstroke where I used to live has brutal riding conditions in the summer. You will be back in the saddle for the good riding weather. You may miss riding to a few rallies. Take care of it and do the therapy. You will be glad you did. Good Luck!

My father had that happen first on one arm, then the other about a year later. Doctors were surprised, as this type of injury is most usually the result of an accident. Most people's muscles aren't strong enough to damage a tendon or pull it free from its anchor point. 50 years ago it was in-patient surgery. They tied a wire to the tendon and tugged it to the anchor point. The free end of the wire hung outside the arm. After a number of weeks the wire was removed and due caution was exercised for about 6 months until the tendon anchor fully healed.

Your procedure sounds less invasive. Doctors recommendations are prompted by their lawyers. Just be careful and pay attention to your signals.

When I felt "The POP", the pain literally brought me to my knees...this is what my swollen crease in my arm / topside of my elbow looked like 2 days later...I knew something was torn...

I pulled my left bicep / tendon months ago and it still is only at 25%.

Only now am I able to quit using it.

I figure in 6 months maybe- maybe it will heal.

I've never had anything "fixed" surgically.  Being one who has had many tears and mangelings of body I'd be interested in knowing how long the healing takes.

At 64 I shouldn't heal much slower and I'm long overdue for a "rebuild".

There is a big, BIG difference between a "PARTIAL Tear" and a "COMPLETE Tear."  If it was only a PARTIAL tear, I would not have the surgery, but a COMPLETE tear means detachment...and that requires surgery, unfortunately...

This was a fairly common injury when I worked in the state prison medical dept Inmates would use the steel cots to do bicep curls with one or two inmates sitting on the bed. The bicep tendon would go "pop".
and they would show up at medical , with their bicep muscle rolled up in a ball on their upper arm.
The recovery  post op was usually fairly un eventful, and with good  end results.
Arizona state prisons used to have free weight "piles" on all the yards, but  some years ago,it was decided to remove the free weights so the inmates could not use them as weapons in a riot, thus  began the use of the beds, as a "curling machine", and subsequent bicep injuries.
Good luck, JJ . You will be fine.
Rick.

Back in 2003 I was trimming a hind foot on a 2000 pound Suffolk mare at a zoo in southern Ma. She was short on manners and after finishing that foot and moving around her left hindquarters, she stepped into me and cocked her hind leg with the intention of kicking the hell out of me. Definitely unacceptable behavior, so to keep from getting hammered I swung my left arm hard into her belly (didn't hurt her) to get her attention. It worked but unfortunately I forgot to bend my arm and immediately felt a severe burning sensation in my left bicep. It had ripped off the bone and rolled up to my shoulder. Considered finishing the work day but thought better of it.  After re-attachment surgery and heeding the doctor's advice about healing and recovery time, it's as strong as ever. Just looks a bit different than it used to.  JJ, all the best to you during surgery and beyond. Just give yourself time to heal and regain your strength. Riding can wait.

All the best for your surgery JJ. Hope it all goes well.

I had the long headed tendon detach. They don't tend to bother doing anything with it as the surgery tends to give more trouble than just leaving it. However, bow it sits in a ball on the shoulder side of the bicep; only gives trouble with a big bicep strain. Tends to suddenly cramp the bicep.

I think you probably will be told not to do much with it for a couple of months.

My daughter's dad did this same thing last winter when he stuck his arm out to stop her and her sled from careening out of control into some trees. I don't believe he had the proper treatment, and for sure he now has a T-rex arm, almost useless, 6 mo later. He's seeing an attorney, not really sure why, but he's MAD.

You're doing the right thing and I'm sure you'll do fine. I can't imagine a better place to rehab than your locale.

They're catching it in time.  He should be fine.

You don't get T-Rex arm from a totally busted bicep.  You get "Popeye arm".  The biceps muscle drops to the elbow in a lump.  After 7 years, mine is the size and consistency of a small, boiled chicken breast.  It limits my throwing range and my arm fatigues quickly when I try to do repetitive biceps-related efforts.  At least the muscle has stopped trying to work.  That was awful for the first few years.

Nice to hear.  Remember to take your meds.

Especially the antibiotics, all the way to the end.

Decades ago my father chastised me because I would take my vicodin because I'm afraid of biochemicals it's a to much education thing.  I've listened to him and now take my "optional" painkillers.  I've found it helps my healing and stops various good muscles from "torque-ing up" due to pain.

You might suggest your Doc to prescribe a "Convert" for mental and physical rehab.............. ........

Best luck with the recovery.  I tore my l/h bicep tendon a couple of year ago.  Initially the Dr was perplexed that I could still move my arm.  After an MRI they realised I had a 'spare' tendon.  Very unusual he said.  First he'd seen in 30 years.  I offered my services as a travelling freak, but I haven't had a call yet.

Shell is deductible if you can get the doctor to write a prescription for it. Cousin has a bad leg. Requires constant exercise to keep it viable. Cousin is riding prescription bicycles. Has been for years.

Best luck with the recovery.  I tore my l/h bicep tendon a couple of years ago.  Initially the Dr was perplexed that I could still move my arm.  After an MRI they realised I had a 'spare' tendon.  Very unusual he said.  First he'd seen in 30 years.  I offered my services as a travelling freak, but I haven't had a call yet.

You're in good company, WG is full of mutants! :thumb:

Enjoy the birds and recover well.

See you at Lake Henshaw.

Owned and rode a K1200RS for 5 years.  Good bike!  Back in the days when any good weekend meant I was in the saddle at 7am, and not back home until late in the day.  I think most of the miles on this bike were here in Ohio.  Good times.

That generation of 'bricks' were heavy machines, but they had some genuine oomph!

JJ .... sounds like you're making a speedy recovery!  Congrats!

Hey good luck with the healing!

I know what it's like to be out of the saddle too. Nothing so drastic, but not improving as much as I'd like. I dropped my Cali 1100 at almost standstill in sand, or rather I didn't drop it, I hung onto it with my non dominant left hand like some warrior till help walked over. It pulled something pretty badly and was off road for the rest of the season. That was 2015, and I've twice had a frozen shoulder since, each time taking 1 to 2 months to heal up enough to ride comfortably.

I've just got over the second freeze, and although it does still get quite uncomfortable, I am back in the saddle............. . well I would be if I wasn't so crap at sorting my carburetors out, doh!

Healing vibes  :boozing: :boozing: :boozing:

Love the bird photographs btw ......... I'm also an avid photographer, and lover of nature

Cheers Izzug

Surgery was the only option, unless I wanted to be disabled for the rest of my life...no thanks.

I will heal in time, and hope to be driving my SUV by next Tuesday.  I will take more nature photos this week...

Take care and RIDE SAFE!! :1:

I tore mine about 12 years ago.  I never felt it happen but I was holding a giant wheelbarrow full of concrete from rolling down some stairs.  A few days later I was brushing my teeth and saw what looked like a tumor on my deltoid.  It took two doctors to identify the probem.  The bicep came off of the elbow and balled up near my shoulder yet had zero pain.

It's in the "use as is" category but I recently had a chance to show it to an MLB pitcher from the White Sox.  He confirmed that my pitching career is over plus I'm 51 so I'll take a hint. He did get a good laugh!

No...but one of these days about the MARTI report.  The stock color is called "Clearwater Aqua."

It was purchased new in Dayton, OH by my wife's grandmother in July of 1967...My wife rode around in the front seat as a 10-year old...

They made 3,595 of this "Sports Sprint" model in 1967. They made 325,000 Mustangs (all models total) in 1967, and reportedly, there are about 1/3 are still on the road today!

Good question...and I will ask this question next week...   :thumb:

IROM brace comes off in 3 weeks...and I hope I can RIDE in 2-3 months...but my guess is 6 months to a year minimum before chin-ups!! :1:

Been following your progress, JJ and glad your recovery is going well.
I have seen many of these procedures,(Retired healthcare professional) and it's remarkable how good
the repair is post op....if one follows orders and hits PT with purpose, which I am sure you are doing.

I also think riding in an aqua vintage Mustang will help with recovery  :thumb:. Nice ride!!

Heal well....

Despite the 90+ degree temperatures, I completed a 50+ mile jaunt this afternoon down to historic downtown Cottonwood and back on "Moby Dick, the 871-pound Great White Whale."

I figured if I can muscle that Orca, I'll be able to ride my Centauro GT next.  My left arm felt good and it felt GREAT to get "In The Wind" once again!! :1: :thumb:   Datil or BUST in mid-August!!
