what happened to the Lario?
« on: January 11, 2016, 05:40:23 PM »
I've been reading about the 650 Lario
4 valve heads. 60 hp. 379 pounds
Why did they abandon 4 valve heads for the small blocks?

You might think, at first glance, that Dusty was just being snarky with his comment...not entirely so.  The Lario 4V head had a bad habit of snapping a valve stem, with an awful outcome.  Others here, with much more experience, can give you more details.  Guzzi must have figured out the solution because they sold a similar engine for aircraft use and that seems to be a real winner.  Chuck in Indiana is the go to person about that project.

As far as I know, Guzzi never did figure out the small block 4 valve, or anyone else, either.
Mike Wrenn has built a 4V nuevo small block, and Todd Egan is working on a big cylinder 4V small block.
I'm not convinced. :)
The Aero engine is what Guzzi replaced the 4V with when they needed more horsepower. It's a hemi with huge (2) valves. Flight proven with thousands of hours.
Makes a good sport tourer out of the Lario.. ;)

Easy for you to say Chuckie

I was speechless.  I thought everyone knew about the SB 4V issues by now. It's a shame, the 4V Lario is just a hoot to ride. Mine made it 5000 miles before wiping a cam lobe.  :violent1: It sounds vaguely familiar.. what with all the big block 4V problems now.

I wonder why the new heads on the V9 don't make more HP
Maybe it's all about torque now

Maybe he and Kevdog are off somewhere plotting an evil plan to corner the Lario market worldwide.

They would keep the heads on the valves if you stayed 1000 rpm from the redline. Most owners can't control themselves.  Like a junkie w/a habit.

That last 1000 rpm is where it's at with the Lario.. or ahem.. way beyond. Mine hit the redline every time I took it out. If you can't use it, what's the use of it?

Dog's in the house. Been away for awhile. Super Lario is running (well...) Super. Kibble white valves, DLC coated cam/followers. Get rid of junk valves that came stock and give it a stinkin' chance. Cam issues yes. Time will tell. Mine has good low end so no NEED for redline. This will help.
