I've used WD40 - it's mild and won't hurt the plastic. It's mostly Kerosene, or so I've heard, so that should work too. Not sure about other stuff like Goof Off - hadn't ever tried it.

Been using Naphtha for years. Melts sticker glue and doesn't hurt plastics or paints. Can even use it to remove labels from cardboard boxes and stickers from motorcycle windscreens without harming them.

Minor variants that you may have around include Zippo Lighter Fluid or regular Coleman Fuel.

Local harder store carries Naphtha in the paint thinner section (often VM&P varnish makers & painters) labeling.

Makes a great degreaser BUT it is quite flammable so be cautious.

WD-40 is handy to know. I've always used gum turps or regular turps but as they say, try it on an out of view place first.

Best stuff ever, has never attacked any surface I have used it on. Like WD40 is a myriad of uses.

Eucalyptus oil.
The added benefit is you'll be more attractive to women.

Zippo lighter fluid. I cover the area with some toilet paper. Squirt it on. Let it set for a few moments to soften up the adhesive or sticker and off it comes.  Been doing that for 30 years on all sorts of surfaces. Never a problem.

"Best" is many times very subjective. Here is the one that works for me:

Varsol, AKA paint thinner, AKA mineral spirits is cheap and effective.

I recently added a "Moto Guzzi" decal complete with birdie to the windshield of my Convert. Unfortunately the decal was quite old and the backing paper wouldn't peel off cleanly from the lettering once it was applied. Left a bunch of sticky residue. I tried minerals spirits - no go. Gasoline - no go. Found the 10 year old bottle of Goo Gone - residue gone in 30 seconds.

^ Goo Gone is good, too.

I just always seem to have a can of WD-40 around, whereas Goo Gone is always gone when I look for it...

WD40  :1:

and a good old hair dryer...I am inclined to use heat gun as it does get quite hot, yet a hair dryer is just about right.

and good old elbow grease with LOTS of patient...
