You know it is wintertime when...
« on: January 17, 2016, 12:54:10 PM »
It is below zero wind chill today. One is taking pictures of passing planes then entering the plane's N number into the FAA registry base to see who own it. I have quite a bit of air traffic near my house. So far no celebrities so far although Harrison Ford is in Wichita currently brushing up at the Flight Safety Center.

This one belongs to a local flight service.

Couldn't quite make out the number in this one.

Definitely winter in KS today... 12F, windy and flurries here. No planes to photo shoot so I'm sitting in the nice warm shop (wood stove  :thumb:) and tinkering with Guzzidiag and Tunerpro on Cali maps. Changed oil, looked at the spark plugs, gave everything a once-over for the tenth time  . It needs to warm up!

Feeding the birds is about the most exciting thing going on

Even the schnauzers are staying in where it's warm.

Still above freezing in CT
as part of my winter tradition I'm spending most of my time underground in my basement workshop
Although I take a 5 mile walk each day and shoot trap or sleet 3 days a week
Gotta go so I can get back from my walk before dark

I know it's winter when riding a motorcycle of an early evening brings to mind a Scotch and the fireplace in my near future.

I went to shoot in a silhouette match today and after the first set of animals, we all agreed that it was just too damned cold to shoot and so we just shot some practice then went to eat lunch. The kind of sad thing was that I was shooting my rifle  (CZ 455) for the first time and was doing pretty well (I think I hit 7/10 pigs).

God will bless you for caring for your old stumbling friend. Dogs are His example of unconditional love. Its -8F wind chill here in eastern NE tonight. In my basement gun room getting ready for the Stalingrad WWII shoot held every year out in Alliance, NE. Looks like a heat wave for the event with temps shooting into the forties on next Saturday. John,

Aircraft still fascinate me.  My uncle Harold retired in Wichita as a full Colonel in Kansas Air Guard...after 35 missions B17 Captain.  Cousin worked for Beechcraft designing aircraft interiors...and I still have a cousin living on the family farm on the river.  He raises a lot of wheat, and sells black walnut trees on the side.  He drives an Olds 442...blue and very fast.

Winter here is alternating cool/dry and warm/wet.  The cycle wacked my sinuses a couple days back and I am fighting a mild cold featuring lots of sneezing and head pain.  Missed a great group ride today with Paul, etc.  Broncos game was fun though, and a typical nail biter.  Having lunch with good friend Jeff tomorrow:  I am trying to get him interested in riding again.  Getting geared up to move into new Villa, closed on the sucker last Friday.  Poodles send a tail wag.  Spring hits here in February, so winter should be over in a  couple weeks for prime riding season.

Far be it from me to mention today's 99 mile ride on the 2003 Stone Touring through the coastal range east of Escondido.  Nor, will I mention that the temps were in the 70s.  I could say that I feel your pain, but you wouldn't believe me.

It's pretty perfect here in Waldheim...40 right now, with temps in the mid-50s in the afternoon. It finally stopped raining around here and cooled off a bit. I had a truly wonderful ride on Saturday to try out my recently restored leather jacket. A really nice couple of hours...

I also made more progress on my shop. The ceiling has been insulated and dry walled and I've demo'd the cheesy old shelves. My drywall guy comes back today to mud and texture. I'm getting pretty jazzed up about this. We put in air conditioning last year, so these improvements, along with some new shelving and wall lockers should really make things nice.  Below is a before and a during couple of photos...

This is maybe 50% of my solar gain on a south facing house. The other 50% is behind me.   It's 30 degrees outside and I had to open windows cause its 80 degrees inside.
Note the overhang of the roof. No solar gain in the summer. This house was built in 67. Someone got it right.
