This 39 year old properly maintained motorcycle is pretty darn good. That is all.

A thing of beauty.  But what's a tinkerer like you to do with a clean machine like that?  Surely you'd rather have several boxes of assorted parts to fit together.   :grin:   Honestly, a new to me 83 850 is so engaging to ride I have all but forgotten about a couple of modern bikes I have.  There's just something about them you can't describe.  It's amazing how little specs on paper have to do with a over the top ride experience.  I love the look of that round fin motor, awesome!  What's your plan for the new mistress?  I can hear those gears turning from here.    { yours not the sports}

It *did* come with a couple of boxes of spares.. but.. I think I 'll leave it stock. I did a little tuning yesterday, and she's a sweetheart. Practically vibration free at cruising rpms. Steering is very light. Soft ride without being ridiculous about it.  :rolleyes: :grin: Handles just fine, thank you. (considering the antique suspension.) I would ride this bike across the country without a second thought.. either for the bike.. or (ahem) me.
Maybe my best motorcyle buy ever. Thanks, Tim.. :grin:  :thumb:

Having just cracked off over 2000 miles in 5 days on my Convert, I'd be inclined to agree.
Oh - I had to stop and clean and gap the points. Unreliable old junk.

Congrats Chuck! I do think the steel linered Tontis are really fine machines!

Essentially a naked version of my beloved SP, and I’m not sure I’d rather have a Purdy G5 like yours.

Chuck - as I headed south from Wawa along the Lake Superior coast I encountered a couple of riders on modern bikes heading ultimately for Labrador and points east. They looked at my dusty, somewhat ratty looking Convert with surprise and perhaps a little amazement.  A couple of hours later I was sitting at a roadworks stop when the two guys rolled up from behind, shocked to find me ahead of them. "That bike really moves along" the one fella said........

All through my second Ambassador years  I lusted after a G5. When I was able to get my first new bike it was a Cal2, so I can only imagine what a bike it is, besides beautiful . :thumb:

I, for one, MISS cleaning points. That, and rubbing the rotor on the sidewalk to improve performance.
That's the combustion chamber of the turbo shaft. It is supposed to be on fire. You just don't usually see it but the case and fairing fell off.

That's a beauty!!

Someone sure loved and cared for it and its going to continue to be well cared for by you Chuck, not many bikes, or anything else for that matter will have received the attention this bike has been given for so many decades.

Ron.. I had a 1000SP,
1-IMG_5221 by Charles Stottlemyer, on Flickr
and believe it or not.. they are different motorcycles. Basically they are the same machine, of course, but the G5 is a more relaxed upright riding position.. more comfortable. Both are solid fine handling machines. Dorcia didn't like the SP at all. The ergonomics are completely different, but she's fine with this one. <shrug>

I always like the SP1000...

When I lived in NORCAL, I rode a 1993 1000SP-III. It was a good bike, but my wife complained of helmet "wind-buffeting" at 75-80 mph, so I sold it to buy my Victory Vision.  However, as a solo bike, it was GREAT and a very capable sports touring bike.

I sold it to a guy in NJ, who got T-boned / totaled it at an intersection a year later.  He was not hurt, thankfully.
