You know you've owned a bike too long when ......
« on: November 02, 2018, 08:14:20 PM »
When you look at a photo and determine when the pic was taken because it still has OEM plug wires and caps on it.

Looked at a pic of my old GS and at first asked .... when did I take this pic?  Then determined it had to be before 2013, because the spark plug caps were BMW oem, which were replaced with NGK caps.

Wow!  Been around this old bike too long!

It (she) definitely has become part of my family.  After 155,000 miles, I look back and think about the great rides we've had.

Lot of parts and labor thrown at this favorite ride.  Hopefully, there'll be a good ride or two way the hell out of state in 2019.  I'm thinking at least to Utah.  Wish me luck!

As a (real) million mile BMW friend told me when my old GS was madly misfiring in the rain "we used to change to NGK plug caps before the bike was delivered". I can't believe you waited so long!

When I look at pictures of me the first year I owned my T-3 and there was not a grey hair on me.

What does the math say that your friend has had to do EVERY day over his riding life to do one million miles ?

My R1100RS just turned over 86,000 miles, after 18 years of ownership.

I may have lucked out.  I ran the original BMW plug wires and caps for well over 120,000 miles.  I changed them when I ordered an aftermarket coil from Motorrad Elektrik.  Never a misfire due to plug wire/cap issues, afaik.

My R1100RS just turned over 86,000 miles, after 18 years of ownership.

My 1991 is showing slightly more than 155,000 miles.  Purchased new in 1991 from Andy Pelc BMW, Canton, MI.

Maintenance record, not from memory, but from spreadsheet:
19 front tires
20 rear tires
44 oil changes
37 oil filter changes
21 tranny oil changes
21 final drive changes 32 valve adjustments

Of course, there's more info, but this'll give you an idea of how I tracked this bike's maintenance over the past 28 years.

It's interesting, that.   We have about 150,000 miles on our 2012 Subaru now.   I've marked next to your list what we've had done to it.   All at the dealer, all at the recommended intervals.

I guess the thing that amazes me between bikes and cars is that I've never, ever, changed the lubricant in a manual transmission or a differential in a car, no matter how many miles, and I've never had one fail.   Maybe we overdo the drive-line thing.   They're not THAT much more highly stressed than a car.

Constant mesh vs synchro mesh synchro cone spins the relevant gear up to speed before engagement. Constant mesh everything it turning all the time, I would also suggest a bit trans runs a lot hotter than a car purely on thermal mass vs volume basis.

Could be some of that, could be .... but does it really make THAT much difference to the oil?   A car with 250,000 miles goes with zero changes, a bike with 250,000 miles recommended for 20+ changes?

On the other hand, I'm unwilling to test it out on my bikes ... !
