I've owned 3 Volvos..a `59 PV544, `61? P1800 & `70 142S.  The S let me down 2X (cam, rings), so I bought Toyotas thereafter(30+ years).  Now I broke a cardinal rule last year and bought a used `14 FORD Fiesta.   So far like it.  Still have our `01 Rav4.

Got no pics, but I put a bunch of miles on my 1958 PV444.  It was fitted with the (I believe) the B16B three main bearing engine, and dual SU carburetors.  Rated at 85hp.  Built like a tank!  White with red upholstery.  It didn't come with seat belts, but came with the mounts for Volvo's 3 point lap/shoulder belts.  They kicked a** in rally racing.
Main ride:  2008 Guzzi 1200 Sport (sold July 2020)

That's a red PV544 like my tan 544.  I think the PV444 had a split windshield and my 544 had 85 hp too w/4 spd.  1 time a dragged a Porsche 356 Speedster and we were dead even until he hit 3rd gear.  The PV had a gap in the tranny between 2nd & 3rd.  and he pulled away from me.

Dean, thanks for posting the really nice pic of the 544.  And, yep, Wayne, the 444 had a split windshield.  Also the dash was more traditional, with a round speedometer.   The 544 had a speedo more like my dad's '59 Buick ..... not a needle, but a linear left to right line that ran across a horizontal speedo face.  Actually, the 444 dash look very much like a friend's 47-48 Mercury dash.  (That Mercury, as in Ford, Lincoln, Mercury.)

Always thought those 544's would make a great hotrod . 5 spoke Cragar mags , small block Ford or Chevy , open up the rear inner fenders just a bit for some wider tires , keep it subtle .

We grew up with 3 122S station wagons (66,67,68), one 1973 145E (Dad bought from the factory in Goteborg) and had it shipped back and then Mom bought a 1982 245DL...

I used to drive the '68 122S up and down California from Palo Alto to San Diego so many times on Hwy 101, it took forever, but it was solid and easy to work on.  Put a lot of mods on it from IPD up in Oregon and over time rebuilt every component (engine, transmission, shocks, stiffer springs) etc.  Car went over 200K miles with a lot of TLC.  Never very fast, but a decent transport for being in college.  Did many a camping trip in it as well!

Good memories!  Always wanted a P1800, but once I got a taste of German engineering (Audi, VW, Porsche) I just couldn't go back to the Volvos...

Not past tense, yet.

Italian content - the 1800 series was designed by the son of the PV444 designer, while he (the son) was an intern or something at an Italian design firm.  Volvo really wanted an Italian design for this thing and it was a long time before they could cheerfully admit that it was designed by a Swede.
