Unfortunately I doubt he will get $2,995. These are great bikes with a fantastic motor but they do not hold a lot of value. I bought my 1996 CR for $2,800 and over paid at the time, I didn't know any better. I then picked up and 1996 SP for $2,150 and w/ 30k on the odo. Bike ran great. Then I picked up a 1995 900ss basket case for $1,000. Sold the basket case a couple of weeks later for a profit. Tried and tried to sell the SP with no takers I took the SP parts I wanted and put them on my CR. then lowered the price of the former SP and it sold cheap. I'd buy another in a second if the price were right.

I always wanted one, I think they are a great looking bike. Thank god he didn't "cafe" it! Around here that is about what they sell for.

In retrospec, I should've bought that bike from you.     Oh well.  The Monster is probably more comfortable anyway.

You'd be surprised the comfort level on the SS's is quite good. If your around when I'm riding it you more than welcome to give it a whirl.

WTF??? I don't think abomination is a strong enough word for that one.

I just don't understand the trend of chopping off the rear section of bikes. I do understand the "tail tidy's" that some folks do cleaning up some of the extraneous plastic etc that manufacturers clearly add on in an effort to be legal, but a lot of the "custom" jobs I'm seeing just don't work and this is about best/worst example that I've seen. FWIW I don't like what I see a lot of folks doing to remove the V7 rear fender, almost as bad as this example but not quite.

The neat thing is the CL owner doesn't admit to performing the tail castration himself and blames the other owner. I like how he says you can probably pick up a cheap frame on eBay and bring it back to original. Yeah that seems easy and cheap enough ::)

He better make time for that 900 because unless he drops the price to about $1,200 it's going to be around a while.

Like this abomination:

If ever that too much and too little fairing could look worse - this guy found the way.

IMHO, it is a PARTS BIKE with the tail chopped like that.

I have a '97 900 CR and I think it looks great with the rear tupperware removed, showing the rear end trellis frame to advantage. Have thought about making some small panels to fill in the space under the passenger portion of the seat though. Fun bike, powerband is very similar to my '98 EV, lots of midrange torque, except with a lot less weight!

I'm staring at a 95 CR on Craigslist now.

Flat sides, high comp Pistons.

I hear the carbed models are a bit better ergonomically, but like the look of the 2001 on full faring.

I think it would be a nice compliment to my Griso 1100.

These older 900ss series bikes are a great value right now.  I have a '98 (the last year of this bodywork) and it's a sweet bike.  It makes my '96 Sport 1100 feel like a truck.

Ask if cylinder studs were replaced if not they are prone to snapping especially with the hi-comp pistons. Aftermarket replacements are readily available if they have not been done.

The frames are known to crack at the steering head from too many wheelies. I had a 95 that was cracked and a 96 that wasn't.

The top tubes would crack at the steering head even without wheelies  A friend had his crack 5 years after he bought hid SS/SP new, at the time Ducati would replace frames. 2 weeks later his new frame cracked. They can be re-welded and have bracing put in to prevent it. But you need to take out the airbox and run foam sock type filters.

Frame cracking isn't caused by wheelies it caused buy frame flex when the front brakes are applied.

If possible I run Uni foam air filters anyway.  ;D

Works for me. They do have a rather loud but nice sounding intake howl that for the rider is heard above the exhaust. They are a fairly simple motorcycle. There was a saying that "friends don`t let friends buy a CR"  their forks were non-adjustable and pretty horrid.

The adjustable forks on the SP aren't all that great either. Last year while offering my SP for sale I got all kind of crazy low offers so to get the bike to a price point everybody was offering I swapped the forks and under slung rear brake caliper over to my CR and also kept the Ducati CF hugger and clutch cover. The sold the SP as former SP.

The SP's also have an aluminum swing arm that is prone to cracking at the pivot bolt and a 180 rear wheel opposed to a 160 on the CR. I was going to keep the alum swing arm but it was cracked. Had it repaired and stayed with the steel one on the CR (they don't break). I also like the 160 rear wheel much better as the 180 turned very slowly.
