Triking Thread
« on: November 17, 2016, 09:35:52 PM »
For those interested in the Triking cycle car. I am a big fan. For one thing I have been an owner and enthusiast of Moto Guzzi since 1978. Had a T3, SP,CX 100, now a Triking cycle.
I must confess of being more of a lurker than contributor, however I have found that the fun and the  utility   that you can achieve with the Triking experience can be so  worth it , that I must speak up. O.K. If you are interested in a Triking check out their website  http://trikingsportscars.co.uk/  Allen, the proprietor Is very personable and accommodating. I did not build my TK, however I have put more than 30,000 miles in 2.5 years, I have replaced single plate clutch after about 10,000 miles.Knew it was coming and worked out great.  My machine had been built with a new old stock 2004 Stone with hydro motor that I know received update early if not at factory.
Anyway, one of  the biggest attractions to Moto Guzzi is the motor. This car uses the MG motor, transmission, swing arm , bevel drive , rear wheel, which if you are interested in this kind of vehicle you more than likely know about this stuff. If not you can ask right here.
My wife and I have gone coast to coast and all over the place in this gem. My love of MG is rooted in simplicity, aesthetics and I can seem to afford them because they are simple, like me. I could go on and on about my experience. If you have questions speak up.I will respond.

I've been thinking about building one myself, probably beginning late 2017. Plan to use a Le Mans 1000 as the donor. Post some photos of yours please.

I'm interested, VERY interested. But the Triking is not the only three wheeler kit car to consider. There are others that often use components from Moto Guzzis.

Having done some research I think the Pembleton and Lomax Citroen based cars are probably the best, they both have two wheel drive, reverse gear box, good inboard disk brakes, and great suspension, but they are all nice.

I bought a 2003 Guzzi donor but I can't bring myself to take it apart, it's too good. I will look for another

Pembleton...

Lomax...

The thing that they all have in common is that they all come from England.

There are also 4 wheeled versions of the Lomax and Pembleton

Wow,,, I've been reading Saskmick's posts about these trike things,,, I was imagining something ugly like a Spyder or Slingshot,

Some of these rigs in the pictures are pretty sweet and classy looking.

The guzzi engine is a beautiful thing to look at,,, simple form and function,,,,

tks for sharing those pics

Here's a very nice Pembleton Brooklands with a Citroen engine. They have also been built with Moto Guzzi and BMW engines.

This one is a Lomax 224 ( 223 is the three wheeler ) I prefer them with skinny wheels.

Trouble with the three wheelers is that it can be difficult to avoid pot holes, where I live it would be almost impossible, they are everywhere.
Everything is a compromise, I think the most practical thing for me is to import a Lomax 224 with a Citroen 2 CV engine and install a Guzzi engine when I get it home.

There are several left hand drive versions for sale in Europe right now.

I've had a desire for a motorbike & side car for a long while now but the Morgan 3 wheeler style perks me up every time I see one

In my old age, I will likely transition into a European style sidecar or a TriKing.

Here are some cool photos for inspiration. :thumb:  :1:

Those 3 wheelers sure are cool but almost less practical that a motorcycle. You sit so low it must be hard to see around / over traffic. Like a Sunday driver on less traveled back roads. I'd rather have a Miata with abs, heater, top, wipers and a trunk.

I've been over to Norfolk to visit Alan at Triking on a number of occasions and bought the remains of the Guzzis he has disassembled to build his wonderful Trikings.
It really is a well engineered and thought out product. I'm personally strictly two wheels but I can highly recommend Alans work. They really are a things of beauty.

2017 Mazda Miata MX-5 RF - - I guess that would work just fine as well...Not the same as a TriKing or sidecar, but anything to keep off the couch and "IN THE WIND!"  :thumb:

Practical and fun are different things entirely

When I lived in Aachen, Germany, 2004-2005, I saw a lot of sidecar rigs like this.  Set up properly, (NOTE the front-end on that Kawasaki, third photo). This is extremely important for obvious reasons, especially at high speeds on the Autobahn, and as a result they handle like slot cars!!    :thumb: :1:

Yeah but I can't see showing up to a Guzzi rally in a Miata.

Mine easily runs at an indicated 110, which is probly 90 in reality. Stable and corners fairly well but if I got out of shape on a decreasing radius curve it could be unfortunate . It is fun but eats rear tires. Mike Rich cylinder heads and all that stuff. I would like to build a Triking but the visability as Brad pointed out is limited not only in the ability to see but being seen in traffic is also troublesome .
