Another hideous old munter added to the stable.

I just bought this great chunk of crap for 8K.

Yes, it's a high mileage flattie and I dunno if it's been rollerised or not but if it dies in the arse I'll just have to rebuild it. I have an 'A' kit for it on the shelf, and some big end shells. I might get lucky with the bottom end.

Well done, Pete!

If you find that the clutch goes, I know a guy who can lend you the necessary tools.  I can probably give you some pointers on getting the engine in and out, too!    :boozing:

Yes it's a 2012 so it could have the explode-O-magic clutch AND the fall-to-bits swingarm but given the fact it's done 110,000 Km I reckon if that was going to happen it would of done so by now!

As I implied, it's a turd, I know it's a turd, that's why it was so CHEAP! (Cue Suspender twang!) but I have the parts needed to de-turdify it and it will be ideal for my up-coming round Oz trip and being a larger bike it will be less, errrr? 'Snug' with Jude and I on it than the Mana which is, in all honesty, beginning to feel a bit cramped!

Hard to tell from the pictures, but it doesn't look all that bad.  You are going to love the space and comfort, though!

The nasty surprises are likely to be on the inside but the VIN looks vaguely familiar. It might be one I rollerised. If it is I'll of been kissed on the arse by a golden fairy, again! :D

Don't worry, the 'Stelvio Groan' is a known issue and although a bit disconcerting never seems to cause any harm.

When the clutch goes feral the anti - rattle springs fall out and mash everything! See Sean, (Sdml's) thread on his unhappy experience. Vic over on ADV also had his go udders skywards but his bike was cursed, so he bought a new one!

I've asked the shop not to start it again and it won't get fired up or ridden until I've been through it with a fine tooth comb and it's been rollerised. It's coming down here on a truck.

Definitely a good choice for touring two up. Congrats

I'm a bit surprised that you bought it without checking for flat tappets, which might have given you leverage to wangle the price a little lower

What we really need is a rubber platypus . Let's face it , much more representative of the average Moto Guzzi rider than a chicken .

They weren't going to move much on price. A lot of people don't know about the tappet issue and the shop isn't going to tell them! It was advertised at $8.5K. I got $500 knocked off because I didn't need rego, (Tag.) in Queensland and I needed to get it carted down here by Porky so they grizzled a bit but then said OK. 8K for a big tank Stelvio, any Stelvio actually, is dirt cheap in Oz terms. I'm surprised it didn't get snapped up while I was vascilating.

It's manufacture date is 01/2012 so unless it's been rollerised it's definitely a flattie. I know it's probably a turd but it's my turd now!

Apparently the "Stelvio groan" is not limited to the Stelvio. My Cali does something similar -- sort of a squonk as the clutch is let out when the bike is first started from cold, with some grabbiness. After a few launches, it's gone.

Nah. Highway 1, the road that goes all the way round, has been sealed for years. Anyway we'll be on Guzzis so if anything goes wrong we'll beat it back into shape with a rock!
