NGC ~ I hate getting old... really: I hate it.
« on: March 08, 2015, 12:48:55 AM »
Philosophically I don't hate anything.  Hate is wrong. It has no redeeming value that I am aware of.
But tonight an epiphany struck. Emotionally, I managed it poorly. I let the realization that I can't do what I once did get under my skin. I hate that knowledge.
As we age, we each cross barriers that separate us from what was to what is. Mostly, those waypoints roll slowly past un-noticed.
Tonight a waypoint poked me in the eye with a sharp stick.
I hate being poked in the eye.

The one thing about getting old is that it beats the alternative.

Yep. 57 here and smiling as I read your "aging" post. 300+ miles in the saddle today, now at 4:30 sitting awake, ears ringing, neck hurting and I'm pretty sure that I will feel
stiffer tomorrow. I am aging better some days than others. I have figured out that my body takes longer to heal. I'm not quite so quick to play Superman anymore as I am
a hair (or two) (well, maybe 3 or 4) slower than I used to be. I have also decided that it's ok.  ;-T I have a grandson who I am crazy about, a wife who I am now mature enough
to love the way a great wife is supposed to be love and finally, the funds to enjoy my days. Accept the change, because to not, is really frustratingly sad, for you and
those around you. Oh, and fight against it as hard as possible so that you may wring every bit of yaya out of that old body and enjoy this awesome life.

Well guys, I can tell you, you haven't seen anything yet!  Live through a couple more decades and then take an inventory of your capabilities.  However, you can tend to slow the decline down, but it make take some life style changes.

My wife and I have been doing the better eating habits for a long time now, but in the last few years we have increased our exercise programs.  We hit the exercise emporium six days a week for at least an hour.  Generally it is the treadmill and weights on three days a week and Yoga the other three days.  Don't laugh on the Yoga thing.  It's mainly for flexibility and balance, both of which become more important as we age.  However, what we're finding is it takes a lot of upper body strength to get into and maintain some of the positions for a period of time.

Enjoy what you've got while you can still use it.  And, of course, ride safe.
Essential to the pursuit of happiness is knowing when you've caught it.
Life's what happens while you're making other plans.
I always knew I'd get old.  How fast it happened was a bit of a surprise, though.

Will be turning 60 this summer and the biggest problem that has developed for me in the last year is arthritis in my hands. I am really feeling it riding now. Nine days ago I covered for some sick staff and went bowling (first time in 30 years) with some students with disabilities. I bowled one game and should have never done that! I am left handed and I still cannot get my wedding ring back on and still hurting.

Yeah, and when your still in the work force and are at least 25 years older and mostly 40 years older gulp! than  your fellow participants, you just get used to being called dad.(smile when you say that partner).

It depends on you attitude as to how one deals? with it. (enthusiasm required)

I'm focusing on street bikes now- 70's and 80's for the most part.
I had to give up dirt bike riding because it hurt too much and i couldn't get my degenerating hip/leg over the seat.
That was a huge blow for me. Been racing and organizing races for the last 20 years.

At 55, I have had surgery on my back for stenosis and I'm getting a hip replacement in three weeks because I can hardly walk.

My father turns 80 this year.  He has little arthritis, is in good shape and gets out on the snowmobiles with us.  he has almost no aches/pains   ???
I get him to take my wife out because within a 1/2 hour it's too painful for me to ride.  The arthritis has made it very difficult to be a stone mason too.

So... oh well, consider the alternative and make some accommodations

Yukonia, I get where you are coming from. Having had four, yes four very very near death episodes in the last ten years, I can vouch that getting old beats not getting older.  Two years ago I was within minutes of death, twice in a week. Today I get another year older, and am grateful. Yes I am at that point where what used to be limber  is stiff, and what used to be stiff is limber, kids are stuipdier, bullshit less tolerable,  and the whole world is going down the dumper. But at my age I am able to appreciate properly what I have, love appreciate my wife completely and without reservation. With age comes a certain confidence and lack of give a shyte.  Enjoy getting older, do what ever you want/can and cram all the living you can into the one life you have.  ;-T

Same here. I can't get on any of my motorcycle so I purchased this Miata thinking I could replace the motorcycle.

It's not happing.  I'm finding the Miata boreing - boreing -boreing.  The 17th I'm due for surgery and hopefully, and if what my friends tell me is true after the surgery, I'll have many years of riding left.

I can, so far, take getting old.  Kind of sucks, but thankful I can do most of the things I always wanted to do now that I'm retired.  What aggravates me is my other old friends sending me these depressing emails with what are supposed to be jokes about oldsters.  It's bad enough, just learn to deal with it.  Nothing funny about it.  Guess I'm becoming a grumpy old man.  I'm with you, Stormstruck.  B.S. is way, way less tolerable.

dilligaf, I too bought a Miata (two of them) about ten years ago, hoping it would replace the mc urge...it never really did.  I love the Miata, love the radio, CDs and cup of coffee...but it just isn't a motorcycle.  But I am able to take my wife with me, something that would never happen on the bike.

Regarding getting old (65 here)...it is a drag but you have to change some habits and make peace with what you still CAN do.  The unfortunate thing is that scientists tell us that as you age...you age quicker.  I can see that in the mirror and it is weird and occasionally depressing.  A good time to ponder the serious questions about mortality, eternity and the rest.

It's going to be 65 degrees here today, I'm on my way to a bicycle ride.  Twenty miles and that will allow me to have dessert tonight.   ;)

68 here with the vitals of a teenager.  Heavy exerciser all my life and it has paid off.  Now retired, I take odd physical jobs to stay in shape and beat the boredom, but taking up motorcycle riding after being away from it so long has really been a great hobby and beats the claustrophobia.  You've got a long way to go, buddy.  Get out and LIVE!!!!!!!!!!!! :bike

To all you whiny youngsters, I say PIFFLE!  Approaching 80, my life's challenge at the moment is deciding whether to sell my two Stones and the Suzuki 1000 sport bike and buy a new Griso.  Key ingredients one can manage to age gracefully are strict attention to diet, exercise and attitude.  Each component is necessary to age well.

Yukonica, I think the Alaska winter may be getting you down and I hope Spring sees you bright and eager and on the Goose.

I'm on my second Miata also. I like them, but it just isn't a motorcycle. Luckily my wife rides the motorcycles with me often, so that isn't an issue. But it does mean that I have to own motorcycles more suited to two up. And I seldom even bring it up with her when it is really cold out.
As for age, I have had some sort of problem with a nerve in my left arm. It really hurts, mostly just when riding the bikes. And especially when cold. It is getting better, but it has taken many months.  ::(  When younger, it would have gotten better in a few weeks.   :-\

My friend Rick and I were talking about this the other day.  He said he could not understand how his tactics for picking up women were not working the way they use too.  I told him to hang on a second, walked into the bathroom and came back with a mirror.  I said look at the old man in this mirror.  We had a good laugh.  Young at heart is great, it is the worn exterior that is ruins the fun sometimes.  I ask my doctor how a guy my age should feel, he laughed, and in a serious tone said, I don't know, I have not lived as long as you.

Compared to a motorcycle, yes it would be boring. But compared to an accord or the Buicks you old guys should be driving ;) it's tons of fun. Just pretend you're 19 and drive it that way.

Learn to accept getting older as its the way of life.If you can't be thankful for what you have, be thankful for what you've managed to avoid. If you can't learn to live with reality, reality will most certainly come to live with you.As the Zen Buddhists say "Let go or be dragged". Retirement is a powerful antidote to the aging blues. I'm a full time ski bum and garage rat again, with the time and cash to get things right with the bikes. Job stress is a memory, and I have time for the bicycle, so I'm in far better mental and physical shape than when I was running an office.

Changed my diet dramatically three years ago and dropped 15 lb. Gail has helped me keep it off.

In general I feel I can still do everything I did at 25. But only once.

Well, here's my take:

When I was:

18 - Girls from 17-25 were hot

25 - Girls from 17-30 were hot

35 - girls from 17-40 were hot (event with the kids in tow)

45 - Girls from 17-50 were hot

50 - girls from 17 to 57 were hot.

At this rate, if I live to 80 - I will be totaly surrounded by hot women. ~;
