Replacing Tonti headlight rim/bucket?
« on: August 01, 2019, 07:54:11 AM »
The chrome headlight rim on my T3 is starting to get very rusty. I have looked a bit into replacing the headlight unit (for example, MGCycle has a replacement bucket/light unit: http://www.mgcycle.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=37_154&products_id=4408). They also have a repro chrome ring for Eldorados, but apparently no repro rings are available for the Tonti headlight bucket.

But if I go the route of a replacement bucket I am at a loss as to how I would replicate (or deal with) the fact that the all of the bike's wiring goes through Molex connectors into the stock bucket. I recently replaced all my wiring with a new Greg Bender loom and don't want to start monkeying around with cutting wires etc.

I was wondering what others have done in this situation. I'd especially appreciate any details on the wire-through-the-bucket issue when dealing with a replacement bucket.

Rather than opening a "can of worms", why not just have the o.e. headlight rim rechomed?

+1. Path of least resistance ( pun intended) No need to dremel holes in the aftermarket bucket to avoid messing with new harness.  And to Charlie. Chrome plater(s)  you use and recommend?

If the only issue with the headlight is the chrome ring, then have it re-chromed. My chrome shop charges me 100.00. These assemblies are rare and if you have all the pieces, (and there are a lot) by all means keep it stock. Harper's sells replacement gaskets that work with a little patience.

I haven't found one that I'd recommend. I'm still mourning the closing of Brown's Plating. They once did all of the bits (including the exhaust) for a V7 Sport in 7 days, beautiful job, $2k. St. Louis Plating has had my latest batch for two months, they had the first batch for four months.

MG Cycle sells one also. http://www.mgcycle.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=37_154&products_id=4546
