The buyers are not buying a motorcycle/mini cycle.  They are trying to buy their youth and, if it can be done, there there is seldom an upper price limit.

Not sure why you are so suspicious?  There were 3 highly motivated bidders at the end.  We have to remind ourselves that $20K can be a very insignificant sum to many out there.

Agreed.  Sometimes it's hard to imagine people living upon a truly different financial plane than the one upon which you live.  Many do, both up and down.   I quote projects consistently and never know who will balk or who will just write a check.   Spending $100K restoring an old car that needs a real garage vs $10-$20K or more for a dream bike that only needs a corner of an office or man cave  makes more sense to me.

At this point, any Guzzi still sporting original chrome bores is an instant extra approx $1K (if you're lucky....) over any comparable period & value bike simply to have a engine that can be operated without guaranteed catastrophic failure.   Seems very extravagant to many people, but others still do it.

Just have not seen this kind of mediocrity (and sold in the tens of thousands) bringing multiple big spenders out competing with one another on other sites..
Surely the idle rich have been out there all along. BAT comes along and they're  driven to it like moth to a flame all of a sudden?I just don't get it. :undecided:

I think it's the format. Just easier on the eyes. And bidding resets the clock, lets you(if you have the $) go at it like a real auction.

I've mentioned this before, it's about our current value system. The traditional middle/upper middle class has receded and their money has moved upwards so the previously wealthy are now extremely wealth and with that comes a la sa fare attitude to spending their disposable income. That's who drives the classic/retro car and motorcycle market now. They don't really care that much about "worth" they want it they just spend the money. They can afford to.

Anything that isn't made anymore is worth what someone will pay for it.

They may not even care for motos, but just are speculating on the future value of a desirable object.

It will be interesting to see what happens to the prices of fossil-fueled, used, and out-of-production bikes when EVs dominate the earth.

I understand 25k for a limited production Honda racebike. The SL must have been a prolifically produced machine, and I’m sure it is fairly easy to restore for several thousand dollars.  I have a 73 SL125 and 74 XL100 sitting in the garage that were just handed to me, albeit extremely rusty. I tried to drop the 100 off at the dump last year but they wanted $20.00 so it round tripped home again. They are pretty simple machines.  I’m saving them for a build that won’t tax me like the Norton or G5 did.

I would like to ask, what do you think these mini bikes listed above are truly worth, by the comments a number of people feel they are over priced. I am not trying to be smart or start an argument.

In the interest of full transparency I will lay my cards on the table. For me I would not pay $1. I could not see one of these giving me any pleasure. Even if I was given one it would be a burden as I would have to store it.

Whenever I think about buying a motorcycle,  I try to visualize myself taking it out for a ride.  Is it the bike I’d choose to go to the store or work or out for a burger.  For me, 500-1000cc vintage standards fit the bill. Good looks, great sound and comfort are essential.  There is no universe in which a monkey bike would be that bike.  I think they are more proof that romantic recollection and middle age disposable income drive much of the auction pricing.  That and marque fever. It looks like BMW airhead G/Ss are taking the baton from SOHC Honda 750s.

You need to distinguish between "worth" and "cost" because they are different things. It's the difference between a things intrinsic value and what you are required to pay for it. Classic cars are a good example. Do 2 identical spec and condition classic cars have a different "worth" if one was once owned by a movie star? Of course not, objectively as a piece of machinery they are both identical items but one will "cost" far more. Into the mix add "want" and "need" and finally add "speculation".
It's the conundrum of our modern first world value system. Currently "want" and "speculation" have the upper hand over "worth"

I've looked at items at BAT for a couple years. I was very interested in several items over the years. I've learned not to bother looking at the bids until the last hour and particularly the last 10 minutes. Which can turn into 20 minutes if a few guys are really interested or just jacking the price up.

I have 2 views.

I can easily see something illegal going on. What or how I don't know. Lots, lots, lots of money changing hands over there.

A lot of guys have accumulated wealth by one way or another. They have realized they could die next week after a week of pain and agony leaving the assets to some one who will just blow through it.  It's my money, I worked for it. Why let them enjoy the money when I can enjoy it? Like the commercial says, It's my money. As I told my teenage son, I plan on enjoying my money, when I die you and your sister can have what's left.

All that said, I'll go with the idea of trying to buy the toys from their youth.

I tried to drop off a very rusty ‘74 XL100 at the dump a few months ago.  They wanted $20.00 so I hauled it home for parts for my equally rusty ‘73 SL125. Now I guess I’m going to have to buy some silver spray paint and a couple of engine gasket kits.

As mentioned, buyers with money and boutique selling formats like BAT and of course Ebay have caused a huge rise in prices on vehicles...
