Just Oil
« on: December 01, 2022, 09:18:47 AM »
What do you reach for when ya just need to "oil" something ?
Your general purpose "oil it all" stuff ?

I actually ran out of "oilcan" oil - and had to refill it a couple of years ago.  This is a mixture of 0w-20 Mobil 1 and LPS2.  Because I had some.  It actually turned out to be a great rust preventer, as a bonus.

I use 3 in One just because wifey bought me some but I like your idea better.

There is usually enough left in the bottle after an oil change to set it on a can to drain overnight and I put that in the pump can. I usually have three pump cans , one for synthetic, another gear and one for motor oil marked with an s , g or m. I put aviation turbine oil in mt eye drop bottles for electric motor bushes if there is some but I put 20 wt non detergent in them as well. I mark them with a sharpie in case it makes a difference for whatever I use it on.

I drain the oil from the container my oil changes come in. Usually in summer, in the sun. I have a dedicated 'mixed' oil jug I use for general lubrication just like what you mentioned.  So, I use leftover new oil.

What lube I use depends on what I'm lubricating. The closest thing I have to a generic lube would probably be ACF50 or sewing machine oil.

Right now VR1 40wt so that the pump can mechanism gets good zinc protection.  I seem to be reaching for the AC50 for tapping, electrical connectors and wiping down aluminum.

I've got several cans of lube around the homestead:

Whatever's left over from an oil change, 80W90 for chain lube, ATF, 3-in-1, and sometimes gun oil.

I inherited a quart bottle of oil with Teflon additive which you add the whole bottle to a new oil change. I have been using it for the oil cans and seems to be pretty good.  I would not put it in a car, but the sliding parts of the old lathe and mill seem pretty happy with it.
