Something Dead under my Shed
« on: May 10, 2021, 05:11:09 PM »
Apparently some critter crawled under my shed to die.  Stinks to high heavens.  What can I do to mitigate or eliminate the stench?  No way I can get anything large underneath, but I can see where something burrowed underneath.

Gasoline...

Or Lime...

Ya probably want to go with lime...

"It is used to capture the putrid scents of decaying flesh. Today lime is still used at mass grave sites to capture the scent of decay and keep soil pH high. Low pH soil is an indicator for a mass grave as the decomposition products are acidic and lower the soil pH."

Hey Cam, The lime idea dont sound bad...Better than gasoline..  I was thinking possibly infusing a beach/water solution into the area or burrow, possibly with a garden sprayer, May help  with the stench,by killing bacteria. Thats just a guess, I have never tried it. I dont think it would hurt anything though.
In the interim, a little vicks vapo rub in the nostrils !

Would a flashlight and mirror allow you to see where the corpse is?  Likely against the foundation wall and not out in the open area.  If so, find a way to secure a bunch of large treble fishing hooks to the pole and reach in to pull it all (or most) back out.  I once had to do exactly that for a dead cat under a  house.

Cam, 50% bleach and water in one of those yard sprayers will help knock down the smell if you can get the wand in far enough to spray on and around the carcass...

Lime is best.  2nd choice but more available is the bleach/water solution.  After that metal screening to keep them at bay.  BTDT.  It's like a skunk attack.  You never forget the smell.

I had the same issue. Dug out a little around the entry, reached in with a pole with a hook on the end of it...and in my case, dragged out a baby raccoon.

If it's a dead skunk, you're double screwed.     Sorry I just trying to imagine the 2 smells together.

Various bugs will eat a lot of the body. You may get swarms of blow flies.. Then it will dry up and no longer smell. Will only take a few weeks..If you can locate the body, it's easy to spray bleach on it using a pump sprayer...

Thanks guys.  Will try the bleach cocktail.  My guess is a bunny, they’re all over my yard.  My pup is always chasing them, and he mighta got a piece of one.

If it is a bunny hole then shoving dirt into it would close that off and block the smell.  Good luck.
