What am I not understanding? (TPS)
« on: June 17, 2018, 11:13:32 AM »
02 Stone, probing the violet and violet/black wires, mv reads 0. Tried it at the computer, mv reads 0. Moving the TPS does nothing.
Yes, we have continuity, ignition is on, everything is plugged in.
Never have seen anything like this..

That means it's time for a break. Wire colors? I just go to the 2 outside wires on the plug.

Yes the two outside wires. violet and violet/black..
We're taking a break as we speak.
I'm thinking probing the violet/black at the computer and ground. That should work, shouldn't it?

Well, I still use my 2 bent up paper clips and slide them in the back. I don't like putting holes in the wires. It could be you didn't get contact.

Do you have a spare meter to check against?  Either the meter isn't working or you're not getting contact.  Since it shows continuity on ohms, the meter probably has contact.  Does the ohm value change as you roll the throttle?

Measure from ground, to each of the three. Make sure you have 5 volts on one.
Maybe the sidestand switch, or engine cutoff, or such, has the ECU powered off and no power to the TPS.

Yeah, checked with a spare meter. Zero. Hooked up guzzidiag, and it said, "ignition off." I didn't realize I wasn't hearing the fuel pump run when I turned on the ignition switch.   Duh.
I *never* use the kill switch.
He always does..

Thanks, Wayne.. I was typing as you posted. I'm *pretty sure* we'll get it now.  :embarrassed:

You are measuring mv dc.  A tps is very easy to take apart and have a look inside.

I recently hooked up the wires on mine, started the engine, turned the tps while checking the timing mark on the flywheel.  The amount of advance and retard of the timing was significant.  Forget the number of mv/dc versus the degree of advance/retard it changed.  I wrote it down somewhere.

I use pins in the plug and alligator clips to hold the setup together.

I feel better, now. Who would have thought to have the start button and the kill switch be the same thing?

That's not a bug; that's a feature.   Having the kill switch on a rocker on the other side of the start button is the greatest idea since peanut butter, or sliced bread.

The number of humanity's manhours wasted from whenever the Honda 250 got a kill switch, until Guzzi invented the combined switch, probably can't be expressed without exponential notation.

Your couple of hours is just part of the price that has to be paid for the benefit of the entire universe of motorcycle troubleshooters .....

Couple of months back I drove into work and noticed an employee with his 250 Honda cruiser in bits in the carpark, so I wondered over to see if I could help. He said for the life of me I've spent well over an hour but I can't get this blxxxy bike started. I don't know what is wrong. It was running fine this morning. Ahem I said, flicking the kill switch off, try it now.

Agreed, Steve.  Not your fault, Chuck.  I am a user of the kill switch, and you are not.  Regardless of this happy little accident, I learnt some things about my Guzzi because you took the time to show me.  BTW, I saw the Aluminum Overcast again this morning.

The clutch thing is a PITA, Chuck, but I'm trying.  Got the throttle body boot slipped back where it belongs... all of the clamps were loose on both sides.  New shift linkage w/heim joints on order from Harper's, and I'll get to the relays and fuses this week with a little DeOxit.  This thing was greased up like an old rifle packed in Cosmoline when I got it.  Shouldn't need anymore deep cleaning!

Be careful tightening those bands.  They aren't supposed to make the seal.  The rubber bits are tongue in groove.  They do the sealing.  The camps keep them from blowing off in a backfire.  Yes, you'll leak air if they are too loose, but they'll split the rubbers if they're too tight.
