Cool bike but I think the front wheel has been changed.  It should be the same triangular spoke configuration as the rear wheel.

Along with a few other bits. Mufflers, fenders...hard to tell all of the things that have been changed on it.

Always liked these, thought they made a nice, mid size platform.

Actually, I think it's the rear wheel that has been changed. This is a customer's Alazzurra that I worked on recently.

Rear fender has been shortened, front is original. 2-into-1 replaces the original exhaust, different rear shocks, clip-ons replacing the original handlebars, no rubber pad because of the 'bar change.

Charlie,

That looks to be in very nice original shape. Maybe the seat has been reupholstered?

It is in nice condition now, was a bit of a mess when the customer bought it. The seat was recovered, possibly by Corbin.

Hmmm, a quick search shows either style wheel on the 1987 bikes depending upon model market.  So either one could be original to the bike & maybe even both....

I have an '87, they are a very nice midsize bike. Smooth, quick enough, and cool enough to be a "Ducati", mine is coming out this spring and for sale. I'm sure to miss it...   best ride was to Eagle Cave in Wisconsin, but good fun to Grattan Raceway (not on track) for Ducati rally...

The Alazzurra SS came with the type of wheel fitted to the rear of this bike, I think they're OSCAMs, the other differences being bigger front brake calipers, a dry clutch, fairing lowers and different paint.  The front wheel on this bike is original to a non-SS Alazzurra, which is what this bike appears to be.

Some people like these, to me they were a bike put together very quickly to combine fashionable mass-market Honda Interceptor bodywork (it is a direct copy, even in how it is made) with the Ducati Pantah design and manufacturing rights that they'd found themselves owning.  At that early stage they were going to kill the Ducati brand entirely, as on this bike, but over time they gave that up and improved the bikes a lot too. By 1991 and the introduction of the belt-SS the bikes were a lot better, and that's what I'd personally buy instead.   Between 1985 and 1991, Cagiva/Ducati was going through a lot of growing pains.

I had one in my late teens and loved it dearly. The one listed is how I would build one if I was in the market.

Logic tells me for not much more money, you could have a 900SS CR.

That Bub 2-1 pipe sounds amazing!

i've got a 650 alazurra, great little bike, with a screamer of a engine.
used mine for years as a daily transport, the 650 engine proved to be absolutely bullet proof.
completely unaffected by whatever abuse you throw at it.
a friend rode his over a 100.000 miles on his without opening the engine.

i did not like the whole fairing arrangement so mine now wears a set of pantah TL bodywork,
i'm probably the only one in the world liking the pantah TL.

A much underrated bike the Alazzurra. It's got a mix of older and newer wheels. The front is the earlier Oscam type 1 wheel and the rear is the correct for year Oscam type 2.

Ciao

Ask about the swingarm bushings, or be prepared to deal with them.  They are short lived and buried in the engine crankcase. Ducati used to supply oversized pivots so you could ream the bushings, otherwise it’s hard chrome the existing pivot, then ream, or split the engine cases to replace the bushings.  On later model Ducatis they went to needle bearings to solve the problem, but the engine castings are different.

Keep a good battery in these, and make sure all the ignition wiring and connections are in good shape with minimum voltage drop.  The Bosch ignition does not like to fire unless it gets full voltage.  You can end up in a situation where the starter turns the engine over OK, but there’s not enough voltage to fire the ignition. Then it’s push start time.

Other issues are that the stock seat is hard as a rock with very thin foam, and the front brake calipers on the non-SS version like this one were apparently sized for a 350, much too small.  The SS version got bigger calipers.

There is no way I’d pay $3800 when you can buy a carb/belt SS for the same amount, but as the basis for a project at a lower price it might make sense.  The wheels BTW fit a bevel drive Ducati, including the ones fitted with failure prone Speedline wheels.  People have been known to buy derelict Alazzurras just for the wheels!

One of the problems with an Alazzurra is that they are all being raped for race bikes/vintage TT1/TT2 bikes. A pair of straight heads off the motor is worth $1500 bucks.....the dry clutch, etc are worth money. There wont be a stock one around pretty soon.

It's back and price is reduced to $3,500. I made an offer.

I used to see them for sale off and on back in the day. I fell in love with a leftover 750 sport that was sitting on the dealers floor, so they were kinda a "also ran" and I never looked hard at them. Sadly the money never came together for that sport [I had to sell my old bike first] then the 900SS came out... and life got in the way. Still want a 900ss but im getting older, and bigger, and the bike is just as small as ever...

The Alazzurras are pretty roomy from what I remember. I can squeeze onto a 900SS and make it work. Recently I got to sit on one of my dream bikes, a Ducati 851. I am too big and fat to make that work.  It's almost as bad as a Duc F1. Scratch those two off of the bucket list... I'll have stick with my 907ie (Ducati Calzone).

Here you go then, an image of my old SP2 with Marchesini wheels and Corse upgrades including Carbon fuel tank, fairings and a Corse braced frame, Corse radiator and full WSB spec engine.

Thank you for those. In my mind, there are 2 bikes that define what a superbike should look like. The Ducati 851 and the Kawasaki ZX7RR. There is nothing prettier than a white framed Ducati.

I sold my 1987 Cagive Elefant 650 to someone from Guatemala.  He and his wife flew to Seattle and rode it home.

I obviously spent a lot of time and money on my 851/888 and what appeals to you aesthetically is a personal thing. I can say though that although I've never owned one but have worked on them quite a bit in racing Superbike form the 916 was a massive leap in all areas from the 851. Looks aside it was such a superior design it was astounding to everyone that worked on both. Removing the rear shock in an 851 for example was a big job, a 916 we could have the shock out and change a spring and back in in 5 minutes at the track. The electrics and quality of connectors took a big leap as well.
