Guzzistas:
Dark and cold Thursday night in Sugar Land, TEXAS. Rainy weekend predicted. Back to the work grind. Spring a month away?
Hence we turn to the old tunes. The foundational. Driving guitars and singers with soul. Wife watching crap TV. Bored. Poodles begging.
Turn it up. To eleven.

Simple Man
Song by Lynyrd Skynyrd
Mama told me when I was young
Come sit beside me, my only son
And listen closely to what I say.
And if you do this
It will help you some sunny day.
Take your time... Don't live too fast,
Troubles will come and they will pass.
Go find a woman and you'll find love,
And don't forget son,
There is someone up above.
And be a simple kind of man.
Be something you love and understand.
Baby, be a simple kind of man.
Oh won't you do this for me son,
If you can?
Forget your lust for the rich man's gold
All that you need is in your soul,
And you can do this if you try.
All that I want for you my son,
Is to be satisfied.
And be a simple kind of man.
Be something you love and understand.
Baby, be a simple kind of man.
Oh won't you do this for me son,
If you can?

Dusty,
Could be, could be....yet I often prefer America, from 1972, my HS graduation year.

Missing the desert.
The ocean is a desert with a perfect disguise above, you know.

Yeah , one of those guys WAS a Keebler elf ;D

I have to admit that I never really "got" America the group. But America by Simon & Garfunkel is a different story. It fits the title of this thread very well, for me.

Simple Man is my favorite Skynard song.

My all time favourite from Percy Sledge
When a man loves a woman, he can't keep his mind on nothing else
He'll trade the world for the good thing he's found
If she is bad, he can't see it, she can do no wrong
Turn his back on his best friend if he put her down
When a man loves a woman, spend his very last dime
Tryin' to hold on to what he needs
He'd give up all his comforts, sleep out in the rain
If she said that's the way it ought to be
Well, this man loves a woman
I gave you everything I had
Tryin' to hold on to your high class love
Baby, please don't treat me bad
When a man loves a woman, down deep in his soul
She can bring him such misery
If she plays him for a fool, he's the last one to know
Lovin' eyes can't ever see
When a man loves a woman, he can do her no wrong
He can never own some other girl
Yes, when a man loves a woman I know exactly how he feels
'Cause baby, baby, baby, you're my world
When a man loves a woman I know exactly how he feels
'Baby, baby, baby, you're my world

Thank you Lucydad. That sent me off utube surfing for quite a while.

I got to see Lynerd Skynerd live pre airplane crash "back in the day" 1 time. Loved it then, but my tastes have changed a little since I was 17<shrug> maybe just "like" it now. Still good classic rock and fun guitar licks to play with especially "gimme three steps"

Check out Drive By Truckers, or Jason Isbell for modern day Southern rock. These guys, plus others I'm sure, carry the torch.
-
To be honest, Skynyrd was a little too quick to wear their heart on their sleave. I always thought of the Allman Brothers as being head and shoulders above the rest of the Southern Rock movement.
It's nice to know that this sound is not totally dead. Though a tad past their time, The Black Crowes certainly kicked the hell out of it and never took prisoners. I just saw this the other day:

Raspy, Chris Robinson style vocals -check
Hot, freaky back up singers -check
slammin' honky tonk keyboards -check
get out of the way before you get run over guitar -yes please

12 below here in the great white north (upstate NY) . Since this is turning into a song thread thought I included one of my favorite Harry Nilsson songs written by Randy Newman and in line with the seasonal hell that is my life.
Enjoy

Ahhh a Nilsson fan. I love the "Point". Have it on vinyl. Both my daughters grew up with those songs and love the story to this day.
