Carvana
« on: May 13, 2021, 04:11:03 PM »
I'm in the market to buy a new used car.  A "sports sedan" w a manual transmission.  Carvana is all over the internet, and promises free shipping, and a no fault return policy.

What do I need to know about them?  Is it really free returns of a car, or is there some kind of "hold back."  Is shipping really free, or will I find added fees, etc.
Can I trust their description?

The thing I learned about them when I was looking a few years ago is that their prices are 40-50% above blue book.  I guess you need to decide what convenience is worth to you.

My father in law bought one from them and we watched it come down from their car vending machine. My across the street neighbors bought a Honda CRV, they dropped off his new car, did an orientation, and took his trade away. He did the entire transaction online in 20 minutes and was very satisfied with the experience. Carmax and Vroom do something similar.

No experience with returns, but the process was easy and flawless.  I found their pricing below KBB and local dealers on the models we looked at.

I guess it's successful because every car I find in a search is either 'incoming' or 'deal pending'. Could just be the crazy high demand for used cars in the NE. Even crap cars on CL are in limited supply.

They've changed. When I see them on Cargurus, their prices are a bit above Blue Book, but not like they were in the beginning.

Milosh and Dxhall, I agree.  When I looked a year ago, Carvana was significantly higher than book prices.  Now, they seem to be right around dealership and book prices.  The difference is much smaller.

Egschade and Bulldog, yes, many people seem to be using it successfully.  It's an interesting concept overall.

One thing I can't stand, is that Carvana routinely lists cars with a shiftable automatic transmission, as having a standard transmission, i.e. w clutch and all.

A shiftable auto, is a world a part from a real manual trans.

My wife just got her car on carvana, she was thrilled with the process. She ended up there after having several friends use them and they were well pleased also.

She has a referral code, if you go that route, let me know... you will get $500 off and she gets $100

The way I've read the ads, the delivery is free only when the car is at the local "dealership."  If it has to be brought in from any distance, you pay extra for that.  My neighbor sold a car to Carvana and told me it was a pretty straightforward transaction.  I bought my latest car from Carmax and am satisfied with the transaction.  Their prices are much more competitive then when they first entered the market here.  You do have to go through a lot of desk time before you're "allowed" to see the car your interested in.

My neighbor used them.  They bought his old car and he purchased a new car thru them.  He did everything w/o leaving the house.  He was very satisfied.

I was reminded of this thread today when I was looking at used car listings.  Carvana price: $15,590:

https://denver.craigslist.org/ctd/d/denver-2013-volvo-c30-t5-premier-plus/7324648982.html

NADA price:  $11,875.

Pretty expensive delivery, I would say.

IDK about buying from Carvana, Carmax, We buy any car, etc.  However, when I went to sell my '16 Outback in March on CL, those companies had no problem pestering me to sell them the car at or below wholesale.  Since I was getting rid of the car to buy another new one, why would I sell the car at or below wholesale and lose the tax advantage I'd gain by trading it in.  Basically, if I could not get wholesale with sales tax for the car it was more advantageous to trade it in but I had no success in explaining that to those guys. I was unwilling to budge on their lowball cash offers, if I had to keep the car another year...so be it.  Anyway, I sold the car to a very pleasant couple for their teenage daughter for a price above wholesale+tax but below retail.  Yeah, I know the dealers do their million point safety inspections before they sell a used car.  I did a few point inspection on the car I sold...it was recently washed, new brakes, fresh oil change, newer battery, tires less than half worn, everything on the car works and 15K miles warranty left on transmission. :thumb:

Good luck with the new breed of used car sales places.

I just plugged my 2017 Tacoma TRD Sport 4 door long bed with 18,000 miles into one of these sites and the cash offer was $35,500. I'm thinking of taking it.

No experience buying from them. But I sold my old 2014 cargo van to Carvanna in late February and they offered me a very generous price on it! There was NO BS and it was a smooth process. Very professional.

Carvana prices cant be considerably less because if they have new cars they come from a dealer and used cars are being bought from the same auctions everyone else is buying from. There may be some deals on new vehicles that have dealer incentives that the public doesn’t see

Because of the “chip shortage” new vehicles will be in very short supply for the next 2-3 months and the price of used vehicles will be through the roof. You will probably see some very strong offers if you request a buy offer from them
