Hello All -

I'm pretty much decided on the trade. Should be picking up the MGX-21 tomorrow. This will be my 3rd bike. Bought the V7 brand new.
Found a 2017 with 5k miles. V7 III Special is a 2018 with 7k miles.

I've been doing some touring with the V7 for the last 3 years and no matter what I did I always found it uncomfortable on longer trips. I added the comfort gel seat and H&B bags. Hoping the MGX-21 will solve that.

Anyway, from your experience is there anything I should know about the MGX-21?

I've been doing some research and read about the weight, tire pressure, adding windscreen and hand guards. Most parts can be sourced from GT or AF1 it seems like.

Thanks for reading and your thoughts.

First - welcome!

What size are you? I have a friend in Camp Hill who's a little over 6 ft, and has both a V7III Anniversario as well as an Audace. If you're interested, I could reach out to him if you're interested in someone who can give direct comparisons.

Thanks! I'm 5'9 and 180. Yeah, I was originally looking for an Audace. They're really hard to find.

The idea is that i'll use the MGX-21 for touring and will eventually pick up an 850 V7.

Just got a reply from my friend—he said to send him your contact info, so shoot me your email or phone number.

My phone number: 717.524.9096
My email: dirkshearer@gmail.com

He’s actually been considering selling his Audace (too many bikes in the garage). All-around great guy and babies his bikes (relatively speaking compared to me :) )

Turn the handlebar all the way to the right before attempting to lift off the side stand.  I'm not a batwing guy, but that is a great looking bike.  Same color scheme as my V7III.

+1 on this. Traded my Norge for the MGX and regretted it. Tried to convince myself, throw farkles, etc, but it wasn't for me.  Sold it 9 months later.

If you like awkward low speed handling(-25) and unstable high speed riding (90+) terrible luggage space, rotten FM reception, wonky electronics, yet a butter smooth powerplant it may be for you ;-)

I've read that bumping up the tire pressure to 39-41 in the front helps with low speed handling and removing the front wheel cover helps with high speed riding.
I don't really care for the lack of luggage space and radio reception. I usually pack light and use bluetooth headphones through my phone during rides.

Idk the only thing I think i'm going to have to get used to is the double weight compared to the V7 and increase in power/tq.

Thanks for your insight though

The MGX-21 is not my cup of tea with the bat fairing, but I'm not going to yuck someone else's yum. I'm a fan of variety, I'm a fan of seeing things that look DIFFERENT. Maybe it's the creative in me that appreciates style differences. So if the looks get to you, then all the better, because you'll be a unique one in a pool full of largely boring Harleys (only boring in the sense there are so...sooooo many out there).

Sorry, the title said "Thoughts?"  Those were my thoughts. When a question like that is posed, if all we do is offer praise then the answers do little for the question other than promote what could be a bad decision down the road.  Yes, I own a couple Harleys, but if I was crazy enough to ask for thoughts on a Guzzi forum, I think I could predict the answers.  To each his own, but my thoughts were:  it looks like a batmobile.

I'm not sure that superficial feedback is what he (or anyone else seeking opinions) was shooting for. One's eyes can already judge for themself. What a person doesn't know is how it rides, and any quirks it may have otherwise.

There are lots of bikes with solid front wheels and no high speed problems. More likely it's the fairing being something less than centered. Handlebar/fork mounted fairings and windshields that aren't correctly aligned can cause problems as the speed increases. My friends Honda with a big Plexifairing would start to weave at much over 60 but was fine naked at far higher speeds.

A visual impression is just as valid as a mechanical one. I gave my "thoughts" and they can be ignored or considered in the decision to trade for the MGX. Perhaps the original poster can chime in about his views on the bike's aesthetics. If he still likes it, that's all that matters. But for many, the bike is hard on the eyes.

Well, they make some great bikes and ease of ownership doesn’t get better in motorcycles. Is a Harley and an MGX-21 the only options considered?

Yesterday you said you were picking up the MGX-21 today as well as asking for thoughts on a deal you’re making the next day.

So, you tell us, what are your impressions of the MGX-21 if you picked it up today?

My thoughts: I test rode an MGX-21 and was vastly disappointed in everything except straight line acceleration. Another Moto Guzzi that I thought was 80% engineered then pushed into production. But yea, it’s ‘different’.

Ok, I give in.

As an owner of two V7's and a Road King I bought because I rode the Cali 1400 as soon as it came out and after almost two decades of late-model Guzzi ownership I realized the Harley was "better" for me in so many ways....

...I say: FOLLOW YOUR BLISS.

you might find you were really wrong.

You might find it's perfect for you

I hope you don't regret it because you did it JUST to be anti-Harley purchase, as that's dumb.

I hope you continue to grow and love the diversity available in motorcycles.

But honestly I think you're gonna want another V7, to go with whatever else, because it's a Goldilocks of bikes.

Thanks all.....and I didn't mean to be rude at all.
I just have a certain perspective on purchasing cars/motorcycles where I try to do something different.
In a sea of Harleys, I just can't bring myself to buying one. I've ridden them before. I have family and friends who own them. For me though, it's just not for me. Also i'm Italian.
I was actually looking at a Sport Glide. Nice looking bike, but I can't justify the almost $20k price tag.

So, i've actually changed my mind. I cancelled the deal with the MGX and will be pursuing a Black 2020 ElDorado with 19 miles today.
It's from the same dealership where I purchased my V7 so I know those guys.

Went and saw it last night. Absolutely beautiful motorcycle. I love the curves and all the little details.
I have a demo ride at 10AM and will get my full impression then.
I started talking to the dealer to run some rough numbers and will be trying to close a deal today.

I will be able to use the current Moto Guzzi promotions (Military) and also have the peace of mind of having a brand new bike.

I will let you guys know how it goes.

Definitely classier looking! Be interested to see how much you can talk the dealership down in OTD price. I imagine they're itching to get these 1400s off their property by now.

I find the MGX-21 pleasing to the eyes.  I don't like the 21" front wheel or the batwing from a ride standpoint.  Since the OP is considering the switch, he must find the looks appealing.

Your disdain for the looks of the bike would have no influence on anyone buying the bike or not, except for very insecure individuals.

Same! They're listing it for 14,999. Trying to see how much wiggle room is there. It's the same price that was listed for the MGX-21 w/5k miles that I was looking at.

The only low blow so far is they are only giving me $4k for the V7 III Special for trade in. The other dealership with the MGX was going to give me $5,800 for the V7.

Semantics - you could just as easily say the MGX was simply $1800 less.

The market has dropped (again) for the 750cc V7s. Brand new 2020's are selling as low as $6K. IMHO $5800 is a strong trade in value and $4K reasonable. I looked at trading my pristine 2018 V7 III Stone early this year and best I offer I got was $3500. Sold it privately for just under $6K.

Yep! The West Chester Motoplex. Knew it as Wide World when I bought the V7.
I'm in Southeast PA. Same area.

Yeah, I have a feeling there's not going to be many more 1400's popping up so I may as well go for it while I have the chance.

Agree! I was surprised to hear that trade offer. I didn't even negotiate. He just said we'll give you 5,800 for your 2018 Special.

Yeah I also agree 4k is reasonable. I want to see if I can get those guys up to 4500 or 5 today and go from there.

Weird question.
I've never had a bike with floor boards. Only pegs.

For those of you who went through that transition, how was it? Do you find that the floor boards are better/easier?

Also, has anyone thrown pegs on a Eldorado? Is it even possible? Kinda counter intuitive I know, but just wanted to ask.

Weird question.

Well, I "made" that transition in my 20s and it was a revelation on longer rides.

Most of the bikes I've owned had/have pegs and going back and forth is no big deal.

But to this day I've never been more comfortable for LONG days in the saddle (like 500-700 miles, 10 hours etc) than I have been on bikes with boards.

Hell, when I got my first Guzzi (Jackal, Tonti Cali) years ago I seriously considered converting it TO floorboards. I never did, but I bet it would have been even more comfortable (see previous statement).
