And finally, some more equipment pics from this morning. What do these machines do?

That's probably the prettiest Harley I've ever seen!

Let me second that! What model is that? I like it!

    Primarily, hold up traffic.

I believe they are used to reposition the roadbed under the rails and ties by holding the rail and vibrating the rock undeneath.

Recently had to wait on what was the longest train I have yet to see. Four engines up front, two in the middle and two on the rear. All sounded like they were running hard. Carrying nothing but containers.

Thanks guys, It began life as a 73 XLCH 1000 that I bought in 75. Currently it is 1267cc with big bore cyls and a mild stroke increase running Shovelheads. About 40% of the frame is all I can guarantee is still from the original bike. That's a Laverda Mirage tank and the tail section/seat is actually a Harley item that was a Sportster option in 1970 and the stock set-up in 1971. The very first Superglide had a similar one that was well accepted but most Sportster ones were shelved and they sold a lot of steel fenders that  year. That seat/fender just didn't work with the tiny tank but totally flows with the big tank.  I'm constantly asked what it is with Ducati,Norton, and Triumph being the top guesses. Here is the best picture of it I ever took.

The economy is rocking.  Transportation on rail and on the road is maxed.

Over the past few years, Distributed Power and longer trains has become common.  Used to be you'd see it on heavy trains on sections with steep grades.  Now, they're running longer trains of all kinds and DP is very common.

Even my local Class III uses DPUs on two of it's biggest daily moves.  Three SD70MAC locomotives and long, heavy trains on a short line.  Gotta love it!      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gdj6A0wm3ZU

Harsco also make another machine that looks more like a road grader, you will see it moving slowly along pushing a small cart out front on a pole to measure the alignment it then comes back and lifts the rail while it tamps the ballast.
I fix lots of the alignment beams and designed a derail monitor for that.

I love trains of all kinds...and yes, the ol' narrow-gauge Durango-Silverton steamer is a classic!

However, the famous "Shinkansen" Bullet trains of Japan is truly a special experience.  Smooth, quiet and "silly fast!"  :thumb:

I went to Ely Nevada to check out this one three summers ago. It is the Nevada Northern Railway. This is the railroad that brings stuff to American Restorations that is on TV from time to time.

So today on our Colorado road we rode the Durango to Silverton train. It is not going all the way to Silverton yet because snow. It goes halfway to Cascade Falls. The engine that pulled us today was diesel. The Conductor said today was the first revenue generating run, so I had to get a pic of it!

These are all the train related pics. I’ll upload the scenery pics in my other thread tomorrow. It’s time to turn in.

As a kid my dad would drag me out to the desert to watch the DD40's drag cars up Cajon pass  then out to death valley to see the old borax steamers left half buried in the sand.

Loved those days.....

I live right on the Frazer river where the trains cross in a great horseshoe, a grain train came in from the prairie this morning two engines in front 140 grain cars and another engine pushing, you don't want to get caught at the railway crossing when something like that comes through. Many of the tugs on the river are too tall to fit under the railway bridge so they have to wait for the bridge keeper to open up.

Grafton WV. Behind the old station.  Such a grand edifice gone to ruin.

Here's a pile of railroad spikes.  I was <kinda> trespassing and figured swiping a spike might be pushing my luck.

Still quite busy.

A blacksmith friend turns rail spikes into art work, the flowers he makes from rail spikes are amazing.

Ive always been a train nut ever since I received my Lionel set in the mid 50's  This is me on the lead engine (Fordyce & Prinston) about to depart Crossett, AR on a 80 mile round trip run in southeast Arkansas delivering and adding freignt cars in the midd '90s  The 1805 was a rare engine, EMD  GP28.  only 16 built. 1800hp, 16 cyl diesel.

My friend, Eddie King was the enginer.

I love model trains and have a few sets, but I won't claim any knowledge about them. A few months ago we got caught by a train that was probably being loaded or offloaded. We sat there for about half an hour before it slowly motored on. I enjoyed every minute, as you can see.  :thumb:

My husband is on a '12 Vespa GTS 300ie Super & I'm on my '13 Vespa GTS 300ie Touring. We do most of our two-wheel milage on these little zips.
If you remember Warren Rhen from WG, he recently purchased a new Vespa GTS300 HPE.

I took this of Warren on his new ride.

Out for a ride yesterday.  They were steaming up in Cass, WV.

Also, I found this little fella in Durbin, WV.

And I found this in Durbin.  What is it?

I would have liked to be there for this, but my schedule didn't allow. I haven't seen the Climax run yet and I really want to. Hopefully later this year. https://youtu.be/YVSA3ykJx7g

I can't see your second photo.

The yellow machine looks like a ballast regulator. The line between Durbin and Cass has been under repair for the last two years or so and should be nearing completion, the ballast regulator makes me think they're getting very close.

Appears to be a GE 44 ton switcher. Odd that it has no numbers or or other identification painted on it.

Charlie, Great Video! Thanks. I didn't realize they had that many steam locomotives there.

That's not even all of them - "Big 6" https://mountainrailwv.com/tour/shay-6/ is down for it's 1472 day rebuild and Heisler #6 is filling in at the nearby "Durbin Rocket" until their Climax is repaired. https://mountainrailwv.com/tour/heisler-6/ The Heisler was disassembled and trucked to Durbin from Cass a few years ago.

A few including the Durbin Climax before it was taken for repair. No 6 ran on the Western Maryland and among the largest shays ever built.
