Your family friends was probably a 1971 model like this one...

This one on BaT is a beautiful triple from Meriden!!  I wish I had the disposable "lettuce" to buy this bike... :thumb:

Mate riding my T160, a lifetime time ago

It's a blurred arty picture

Wish I'd never sold it.

We had a tempestuous affair with tantrums thrown often by both parties, but Meriden Triumphs were no where near as unreliable as made out in the wider community & that bike NEVER left me stranded........... ....although it did have a dammed good try from time to time

My '75 Trident T160...  The second one that I have owned.

I had one thirty years ago and foolishly sold it.  As soon as the tail light was out of sight, I missed it.

Bought this one about five years ago.   I recently did a few things to the Trident to correct some previous owner stuff, and then prepped it for long term storage.
Nearly perfect now and it should stay.

I may take it out again next Spring.

Nice bike!

Real Classics recent motorcycle magazine has a Trident on the cover, the rider has put ridiculous mileage on it riding it all over the world including competing in the IRB, a very interesting article and an eye opener for me as I had thought the triples were not the most reliable of bikes.

I had a friend who loved all things British, Traveled the country in MGB's did cross country trips on his 75 Norton, would defend them no matter what the issues they had. Then he bought the Trident, which I found in an Bargain News Ad. He tried for years to get this bike to be reliable and never could, I think the finale straw was when it left him stranded north of Montreal and had to get it back home to Connecticut. He ended up selling it to a guy who was buying up Brit bikes and shipping back to England.

I agree, the bike in Mikes video has a wonderful exhaust note.  It sounds much better than any modern Speed Triple I have heard.

That would be a T150, the T160 was 1975 only.

Absolutely correct about the "On the pipe" song, intoxicating.

The T160 is a beautiful bike.

Tridents can be money pits, though.

It must have been one of the last non-T160 models in 1975.

Way back when in the mid-70s the mechanic at Brattin Motors, a BMW/Triumph dealer made it his mission to ride a new Trident to high mileage.  Cycle Magazine wrote up the story, the bike and what it took to get to some very high mileage (might’ve been 100K)… it was not a CB750.  The story would be good reading even today if you have an interest in Tridents.

My 1972 T150 is the Regal Purple ,,,,, the 1971 models were black & white ,,,,, if your lucky and your 72' was built late in the model year you got the 5 sp. upgrade otherwise you had a 4sp. I have owned all of the trident models at one time or another and my favorite was the first 72' I had. I still own a 69' and another 72' and the 1974 models. My T160 was the most uncomfortable of them all. The E-start was more unreliable than my Norton E-start. I liked the big gas tank on the T160 though because it was a gas hog ... :boozing:

I found that synching the carbs and timing each of the three sets of points could have their moments... Seen a few that grenaded because one set of points went out of time, causing the motor to run hot and melt a piston. Happened to a friend who had a very nice X75 Hurricane.

I had a bought used 73 Trident in the late 70's...I rebuilt the engine and some tuning tricks. It made good power and I abused it with quite a bit of drag racing..Nothing broke but it was not without it's share of typical Brit bike problems..Handling was more stable than Japanese fours of that time but like them the Trident was a heavy bike...

I just HATE when my vintage, mint, $28,000 Triumph X75 Hurricane "explodes" due to a set of points going out of time...
