V7 II mini saddle bags complete
« on: March 16, 2017, 04:33:03 PM »
This was the beginning:  http://wildguzzi.com/forum/index.php?topic=88877.msg1405164#msg1405164

At my shop, this week, brackets were cut from 1/4 inch x 2 inch x 10 inch 6061 aluminum.
Pelcian 1170 cases were picked up at Home Depot this morning.
Clearances checked, bags temporarily mounted, then brackets painted and " bags" installed.
Left side holds compact foot pump (made in Germany and I can no longer find them), Sean N Air and night glasses with some room to spare.
Right is is empty for whatever, such as water bottles, lunch sack, etc.
Deeper (if still with clearance of mufflers) would have been better, but I could not find them without too much width or length.
Screw heads/washers covered by foam.
Bracket is tapped, so locknuts on back serve as double nuts.

While I was gone, Dart Marlin flyscreen arrived and I installed it, after I got home from CA, last night.
Off for a ride in a few minutes.

Very glad to have them on, but they don't cover everything.
Today, I purchased a quart of 85w-140 and it was about 1/8 inch too long to fit in the right case, even on a diagonal.
Stuffed it into my shirt (85 F this afternoon, so no jacket) and went home,  before going to Big 5 for which I had a coupon for $5 off on a $15 purchase.
Son now has another box of ammo.
The right side case could have held a LOT of ammo!

You may be able to do something similar, if you put a stiffener(masonite, etc.)  inside each bag, on the tire side.

I've never seen Pelican boxes used for luggage on a motorcycle until this week, yours and some top loaders on the XLForum. If I decide to put luggage on my new Roadster I'm pretty sure I would use the Pelican top loaders. Or maybe  something like yours but a little larger. I like them, function over form for me.

Pelican cases are quite popular with the adventure crowd.  Search over at ADVrider.com.

I had the larger Pelican 1440 top load and smaller 1430 top load on a VStrom from 2008-11.  The 1440s were huge, heavy, and ready to tour the globe.  The 1430 was perfect for everyday and in-town use.  Used SW Motech racks as the basis or the rack system, then trips to the hardware store to mount the cases to the racks.  For ideas, see my really old VStrom forum thread with links and photos.

Top loader tail bags/cases are good for volume, but I rarely take an overnight trip and like to not bulge the bike's lines.
I do have a military tool bag to strap onto the rear seat, when needed.
All 14 previous bikes were naked standard bikes...adding the flyscreen and mini side cases is a bit of change for me!
Speaking of the XLForum, I have not seen much electrical issues lately and since I am trying to reduce computer time, that is not a complaint.
