Apple Maps
« on: January 15, 2022, 07:19:59 AM »
Does anyone else just open Apple Maps or Google Maps and look at roads for riding?  My favorite musings are Vermont, which is realistic for warm weather trips, and Europe, which is more of a bucket list thing.

I'm in Europe (Italy) at the moment, and we find Google Maps to be vastly better than Apple Maps when using a cell phone for navigation. This brings up a related subject (using a dedicated GPS device vs a cell phone) and I'll start a separate thread.

I also like OSM maps. If you find an issue, you can go online a fix it.

When I am planning to go somewhere I look at google maps in "Terrain" view so I can see the elevation changes as well as the curves.

Then I create a custom route in my Garmin Zumo 660 to incorporate as many of those roads as I can while still being able to get to the destination.

What about apps like Rever.  Are they worth the subscription cost?

I don’t think the original post was about what apps we’re using, or GPS vs phone.

Occasionally I’m open up a map and just stare. Tends to be in the early spring. Sometimes that causes severe jealousy for my neighbors with more local roads and less congested land. Or farm roads. I miss riding those rural roads where you don’t often expect many other cars near you.

I was asking more about daydreaming and less about navigation. I don’t use electronics while riding.  I prefer to let the fates find me cool things, or else stop for coffee and look at a map.

I never understood daydreaming without a plan to make it happen.  So you look at these cool places to ride, and then don't seek them out to actually ride them?

When I watch Noraly riding in South America, I don't daydream about riding in south America, I think about all the cool roads in the US that I can and have ridden.

Just because I don't understand it, doesn't make it wrong for anyone else. I just like to go on adventures instead of just daydreaming about them.

I probably wouldn’t look at my IPhone maps for a region where I would never ride.
I do use it a lot to search for breweries, taverns, motels, hot springs and fun terrain.
I was looking at Mt Evans just this morning. An easy weekend to weekend trip when Summer gets here.
