Title: Calling all California Special/Bassa Owners!
Post by: Atlanta Guzzi on September 12, 2008, 12:45:14 PM
Yesterday I received a PM from Bernie Thompson, Washougal, WA, who owns a '01 California Special in "giallo sole" or sun yellow.  Wow!  Very sweet bike!!   :D ;D ;)

I'm extremely biased...but I love all the California Special/Bassa models (Pearl White, Black, Sun Yellow, Blue/Silver, and Brown/Tan).  Yes, they all have the plastic chrome and for some folks it's just too much "bling".  But for me and my gang (all owners included)...it's just the way we roll!   :D

After I touched base with Bernie, I started thinking about a general registry for all the different models of Guzzis.  Maybe one already exists??  If you know of a registry somewhere out there please provide a link.

In the meantime, I would like to create a simple site dedicated to the California Special.  So, the first step is to find out who owns what.  If you own a Bassa or California Special please respond to this post and send me a PM.

Also, since we all love pictures...post a photo of what you have.

I'll start.

2001 Cal Special. Just under 40k miles. Givi windscreen, Wilburs Shocks, Mistral Muffs, PCIII (dynoed), Guzzitech head gaurds and crack-proof H-pipe (replaced the cracked Mistral H-pipe), Jet hot coated head pipes, HB hard bags, Quest II GPS with Ram Mount, Napolean Mirrors, and Universal Vista Cruise. Otherwise basically stock.

2000 Bassa, Blue/Silver.  "the Blue Goose"
Old picture, I've tweaked a few things since.  Hepco Becker Liberty bags, Hepco 45L tail trunk, Neds comfort seats, M-G forward controls (soon to go back to stock pegs), Saeng Night Cutters (driving lights)

Nice bikes guys!!

The pearl white Cali's/Bassas are awesome.

Also, I've never seen a Blue/Silver California Special in person.  Sweet two-tone combo!

Does anyone know how many they made in each color?

They are IMHO, the best 'cruiser' style bike Guzzi ever made. But I am biased having owned a 1999 black one and now a 2000 blue/silver beauty. Mine has EV floorboards, Centauro bars, a Cal2 front crash bar and a few added chrome bits here and there.

Truly a great bike,

Mark

Once again, thanks for posting the photos!!  I've never seen a Cali Special/Bassa that I didn't like!

If you take time to look at the lines on the Cali Special/Bassa's, you'll see a very graceful and unified approach to design (at least aesthetically).  The headlight is larger than some models and the front and rear fenders blend well together.  The rear fender is actually larger than any of the other Cali models (except for the Cali Special Sport and Titanium, which are Cali Special/Bassas wearing another suit!) and the chrome insert matches the front fender.  The rear tail light is also different than others models of this era and was eventually used on the EV.  Finally, the valve covers, and other bits, are less adorned (not engraved) than on the previous bikes, and Moto Guzzi was still using the silver engine paint.  I admit that I pretty much like all Guzzi's...but I think Mandello was on there game when they designed this model.  The fact that they didn't come from the factory with all the touring gear (although not as practical) is something I actually like.  :)  Visually I've always preferred a cruiser without luggage/windshields/etc.  I must admit that I have bought separately all the gear you would find on an EV..and use it as needed. :D ::)  But I still like the looks of a Cali Special or Bassa striped down, light, and ready for the road.

Nice bike and location!!

I always wanted to go to Zion.  At one time I had flight privileges, though Delta Airlines, and used to backpack several of the US National Parks.  Unfortunately, the flight privileges ran out before I got to make the trip.  It must be awesome on a motorcycle!

Very nice bikes!

Chicago Mark - Post a picture of your bike if you have one.

In my neck of the woods I've only seen white and black Cali Special/Bassas.  The total count, over 3 years, is 2 whites and 2 blacks.  Also, I saw a brown/tan when I was riding in North Carolina.

The ones in pearl white are pretty impressive.  I think it's the best "white" I've ever seen on a bike.  The pearl gives the paint depth that you don't find in a typical white paint job.  If you see one in person you'll know what I mean.

So far I've only seen one black Cali Special/Bassa that was in pristine shape (It's a hard color to keep clean. :)).  But, when you see one in great shape...it's pretty sweet!  My first bike was a black bike, so I like the looks of that color on this model.  It makes me wish my first black bike was a Cali Special.  If so, I would still have it!   ;D

Alas, no photos - but I love my 2003 California Special Aluminium.  Handles wonderfully and purrs at highway speeds.  It's completely stock, except for the Guzzi backrest/rack (direct from Agostini) and the dual plate clutch/lightened flywheel setup installed in response to a poorly designed single plate system.  I've only got 10k on it, but hope that will soon change if I can ever get a day off work.  I think its a work of art, almost comparable to my brand new (to me) '97 Sporti.  ;D

This is my 1999 Bassa,  I like the looks of the Bassa but could do without some of the chrome.
YSS shocks, Hyperpro fork springs, 5.5mm fully floating Brembos, Harpers floorboards, xover, 30mm SS handle bars.
Its my daily rider. I noticed allot of posts on this thread  are people in Georgia, we should all get together sometime.
I know of two other Bassa owners that are not on this board. One has a pearl white 1999 Bassa, he is also Georga.
Another friend has a Black 1999 Bassa.

WOW!!!  What a bike!  We definitely need to put together a California "mini-rally" just so I can see a blue & silver Cali Special/Bassa in person.  :)

Actually...the small rally idea is not a bad thought.  I wonder if we could plan a spot for several Cali owners to meet, with the goal of having at least one bike from each paint scheme/model for the past 10 years or so?  It would be a pretty cool group photo!

There was a beautiful blue & blue 98 EV at the Georgia Campout this past weekend (wish I had seen it before the batteries died on my camera  ::)).

Anyway, sweet bike Todd and please let us know if all that chrome becomes to much of a problem.  I'm sure one of us is willing to help you out and take that bike off your hands.  :D ;)

It's probably not too late to find a brand new '07 left-over for a negotiated discount.  Saw one on Ebay recently from a dealer in NC that was selling an '07 Vintage with 400 miles on it (demo), but I didn't check to see if it sold.  I love mine and am thankful the bank still had money to lend.

It's been too long since I've done it but yesterday I was able to go for a nice ride on my beautiful blue and silver Bassa. Man, these are great bikes. I think of the Bassa, V11 Sport, EV and Jackal as the last of the true Moto Guzzi designed and engineered bikes. Soon after these bikes, Aprilia's influence in design and engineering showed up.

Have an awesome ride,

Mark

Mark - I still want to twist your arm into posting a picture of your bike.  ;)

I think Aprilia bought Moto Guzzi in April of 2000.  As you mentioned, the model lineup prior to Aprilia's influence was the Bassa (US), Cali Special (Europe & US), Jackal, and EV.

Why we saw both Bassa's and Cali Specials in the US for 2000 & 2001 is a good question.  I've been told that Aprilia may have made the simple management decision in 2000, following the acquisition, to maintain a single moniker for the bike.  ???  At the time this model was the only bike in the lineup that was being marketed under two names for different regions of the world.

Following the acquisition, the wave of Aprilia/Guzzi Cali's were the California Special Sports and Stones (both with various colors).  Although I also enjoy owning one of the last pre-Aprilia models, I like the Aprilia influenced combinations too.  A two-tone black/red Cali Special Sport was almost my first Guzzi.

I guess you could say that the vintage is the first Piaggio/Guzzi Cali?  Piaggio bought Aprilia (which owned Guzzi) in August of 2004.  The Aprilia influenced Cali's were already in production.  The US received EV's, Cali Special Sport variants (Aluminum, Titanium), and Stones in 2005, and first "new" model Cali was the Vintage, which showed up in 2006/2007.

While writing this post...I just realized that the Vintage could be the last California built in the old factory?

Anyway, regardless of which model someone may own, I think it's great that a "version" of the California has been in production since the '70's.  My favorite is the Bassa/Cali Special...but I like them all.  :)

Wow!  It's funny how times change.

I rarely if ever visit this site anymore, since getting changing jobs, getting married and having a 4 year old to keep me busy.  So I get a message out of the blue, check this site, and here is a list I started 9 years ago!

I still have my bike...but rarely have time to ride it.  I attempted to put it up for sale last year, but was so busy with projects at work and family activities I couldn't even keep up with all the requests for information and interest in buying it it.  ....Oh, well.

For anyone with some patience, I'll be try to put it up for sale again since someone else would get more more use out of it than me.  Send me a note if interested, and this is a fly-by-the-seat if your pants sale.  Lot's of Guzzi gear to go with it, but not a lot of time to list it all.

Thanks!

For anyone with some patience, I'll be try to put it up for sale again since someone else would get more more use out of it than me.  Send me a note if interested, and this is a fly-by-the-seat if your pants sale.  Lot's of Guzzi gear to go with it, but not a lot of time to list it all.

Thanks!

Guzzisteve's post this morning and your own checking on w/g, Robert, were pretty darn serendipitous!

For anyone musing about following up on Robert's Guzzi, let me assure you from miles of riding with Robert and hours watching him in the GarageMahalo that he is meticulous in buying, owning, maintaining, and all the other "ings" involved in m/c ownership.

Whoever gets his Cali will get a beautiful beast from a gentleman of a PO.

Robert, Kathi says "hi" to you, Melonie & Ana-Verie. Come up this way and visit sometime!

Bill

Bill & Steve - You're both too kind as always.

Also, responding via my phone is now a lesson in grammar skills when using a tiny screen and typing with your thumbs!!

This is an impromptu sale, so contact me to discuss and make me an offer.  I've got a lot of Guzzi gear from all the years of owning this bike, so if this is something that might peak your interest bring a big truck.  Here's my most recent photo, probably from late September.

BTW - I have a really sweet Watsonian GP700 sidecar I'll try to post on one of the sidecar websites over the weekend too.  Just one of those projects I never had time to complete.

Thanks for your interest,

Robert

The Winchester Moto Sports Bassa sure looks like what I would want...have submitted an inquiry as to additional specifics and will go from there.  Thanks to all for the leads.

Sorry Marc, the Winchester Bassa lives at my house now.  I bought it months ago, apparently the owner of the business is a little slow removing his stock photos.  Keep looking, they show up on Craigs and Flea Bay every so often and all the best on your search......

I realize that the Vintage is not a Bassa or a Special, but I saw that you counted one so here is mine...an '07:

Here's my new California. Not a Bassa, not a Special, not a Cal III, not a Vintage, just a straight up California. Tt's pretty special. It's one of the 15 LeMans powered '91 Californias that Guzzi sent to the US.

I'm exploring seat options. The Corbin is nice but man is it tall. Anyone know if a seat from a California Vintage comes anywhere close to fitting?

Vintage seat should fit, you will need the latch set up and a hole in rear fender. You may need to remove the rear grab rails also

Doesn't hurt to test the waters.  I have since pulled the ad and gonna ride "Snowflake" to the Virginia Rally later this month.  I was really thinking about thinning the herd to get a four wheel project, VW Bug or van, British sports car, MG or Sprite,  so forth.  Probably never find another EV this sorted out so it's off the market for now.  My wandering eye hits occasionally and something goes and something new comes in, usually not at any profit in my favor, but I enjoy the process........

I don't have a photo sharing thing yet so no photos.   But I am a new owner of a 1999 pearl white Bassa.  Just got it off Craigslist from a guy in Winchester.

Also saw I guy riding a similar California in downtown Baltimore today.  Black with slick hard bags including a bag guard.   Nice looking bike.  Don't know if he is on this forum.

I am new to the Bassa machine and am not that familiar with the different windscreens available.  Could you post a pic of the Sport windscreen you are looking for??  I intend to keep the windscreen that is currently on my Bassa (as shown in the photos above), however, I have another windscreen and mounting brackets for the Bassa (which were included in the purchase)....I don't have a pic of what I have right at this moment.  If you can't provide me with a pic of what you're looking for, I'll try to post a pic of mine.

Great thread with awesome pictures. Love the 99-00 Bassa's, my 2000 blue/silver was my all time favorite Moto Guzzi. It was fun reading my old posts under Chicago Mark from 2008. They had adjustable forks and even a drain plug on the bottom of each fork leg to make fork oil changes a breeze. The 99-00 also had tubeless wire wheels. The Bassa, IMHO, still has the WOW factor in the looks department. The fenders made sense with the side covers and the tail light. The bike just flowed well except for the side cover chrome piece not reaching far enough towards the intake. Even the Swiss made leather bags looked like they belonged on the Bassa instead of being an after thought item.  As did the Classic and Sport windshields.

Piaggio could put the 1400 motor with the 6 speed in it, go back to those good forks and tubeless wheels and call it Bassa II. Offer them in black, blue/silver and pearl white just like the original. and yes, keep the Bassa style tank instead of using the one from the current 1400 lineup. A Bassa II would be an easy redesign and IMHO, they'd sell in North America and beyond.

Im new to the MG models...  But looks wise, Im surprised the Bassa is OLDER then then EV, stone, etc...  Stylewise it looks so much closer to the modern vintage...

John... that bikes a stunner. I started looking at the Cali/EV, stone, etc bikes because the price, and because they were around..  My plan was to get one and do like you did... I do really like the look of the Stone Metal I ended up with, so might keep it as it is, and find another to work on...
Title: Re: Calling all California Special/Bassa Owners!

The early EV's used an older large ECM under the seat. The Bassa (99-00) used an updated and smaller ECM under a side cover. Likely one of the reasons the EV seat looked so big and the Bassa (Italian for Low) was sleeker looking with the smaller seat. But yes, for the most part, the mechanical structure Frame/Engine/Drivetrain between the EV and the Bassa plus the CA Special Sport are the same.

The later EV's also used the much more aesthetically pleasing Bassa rear fender and tail light. Though I don't recall if the EV retained the original odd looking chrome panels between the rear fender and the side covers. I think the EV also retained the smaller triangular side covers throughout its production run. The original EV tail light was quite an odd looking piece and to many, its looks were enhanced with the Bassa rear fender and taillight. .

After the 2000 Bassa model, the subsequent CA Special Sport model lost the tubeless wheels and the adjustable forks. Making them, for many, a cost cutting exercise from Piaggio. Similar to the no frills Jackal.

I had a 99 black Bassa and a 2000 blue/silver one. On both of them I swapped the Bassa footpeg subframe assemblies with an EV rider who preferred footpegs over boards. They also had the Bassa saddlebags with the Guzzi rear seat backrest luggage rack. One thing that made them comfortable for me was to replace the Bassa beach bars with a set of the V10 Centauro bars and risers. I think I had all three of the Bassa windshields as well. They had a Classic one, a Sport one and the one called the California Touring windshield. Both of my Bassa's also had Mistral mufflers with an aftermarket Italian made K&N style air filter. One of the trim pieces offered by Agostini were chrome throttle body covers that perfectly blended the chrome horn on the Bassa side cover with the intake track to the head. The Guzzi accessory throttle body covers never aesthetically flowed right and looked more like an after thought.

Like I posted earlier, Piaggio could easily come out with the Bassa II by retaining all the goodies from the original Bassa but using the 1400 engine and drivetrain. Stretching the ergonomics a bit to make two up riding roomier would also be a huge plus.

98EV's got a stripped down version in 99, same wheels, different rear fender. Bassa and EV are same running gear, Special Sports were next then evolved into the Aluminum & Titanium.
There is a White 01 in the Club Classified now. Seems like Shelby isn't riding much. Should be a nice one.

.......The later EV's also used the much more aesthetically pleasing Bassa rear fender and tail light.....

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder !  The early and later EV rear fenders are quite different, but I like them equally well.  I have the "Old" style on my '96 Cali, and the "New" style on my '04 EV.  I wouldn't say one is much more aesthetically pleasing than the other..... IMO

The "secret sauce" is, they are all Tonti Frames under the sheet metal and plastic.  A design that was copied by many manufactures into the future.  Designed for racing.

After buying my first Guzzi in boxes, a 79 SP, rebuilding and riding for many miles, I was ready for something modern but with old school looks.  Knowing that the Tonti frame was very similar through out its life cycle, I began to looked at many models to see what tank and side covers would match.  The rear fender is a trimmed Stone/Metal.  Grab bar and side covers are 850T, Tail light many models,  Seat and Tank Lemans 4.  Bassa/Sport 1100 front fork upper tubes with compression and rebound adjustment, Brake and clutch levers Sport 1100/Centauro, Foot pegs, Stone/Metal, Windscreen is a GIVI replica of the Titanium.  I threw in a Magni swing arm, Ram Clutch, removed lower frame rails, relocated foot pegs to the passenger peg location and made a new shift and brake lever, Aluminum tubeless rims and a lot of other changes.  The bike runs great, rides great.

I have another engine that I am waiting on the heads to be twin plugged and a  set of high compression pistons to install.  I had installed the high compression pistons last year and rode it a few miles.  I could not get the detonation tuned out at wide open throttle.  It ran great, but sounded like two metal spoon being tapped together at wide open throttle. Before I shimmed the base of the cylinders, it was showing 225 psi cranking pressure.  I shimmed the base and got it down to 190.  Pete Roper said I was going to blow the heads off.  That would be interesting to see, from a distance. It's a  toy and something to keep me occupied in the long cold winter.
