V7 Chrome bores
« on: May 03, 2015, 02:09:14 PM »
OK, so for assessing my "new to me" 69 V7, which was the subject of a prior post, I borrowed a Snap On bore sight. Its a long snake with a light and a camera on the end. You can then upload any pictures onto your computer. They sell new for about $425. Good for looking inside your engine without tearing it apart. Here is was a chrome cylinder looks like as the old chrome wears off. I have not done a compression test yet, but I am assessing my options, do I resleeve these with new rings or try a set of V7 bores, or if the compression is good ...? Hmm.

The old chrome at this point is not wearing off a molecule at a time, but a big flake at a time and will be chewing up bearings and wearing out oil pumps ....

I'm sure that no one at Guzzi in 1967 when the chrome bores were designed was thinking forward to 2015.   I mean, the Star Trek guys in 1967 were dating the Eugenic Wars for 1992 , for heavens sake ....

If the pistons are still good you can send the cylinders with the pistons to a place for Nikusil plating. Millenium, I believe. In any case, the motor needs a teardown and hope the chrome did not damage the crank.

I have gone with new Giladorni kits three times and just sent of my S3 jugs to Millennium (Fast Industries) in Canada, I am fitting NOS pistons, rings and gudgeon pin for the Millenium option, only because I want to keep the 750 S3 stock. For what its worth the Giladorni option is less expensive and idiot proof. At a minimum pull the crank out and clean out the sludge trap and then have the crank measured, the non oil filter bikes east cranks and new main bearings and shells, done three and all needed a reground, that and the oil pumps suffer as well from chrome flakes. Once you dive in it can be a minimum of $900 for the Giladorni kits, add gaskets and seals, then seriously consider new valve guides and a head job, another $300 without new valves and springs, then IF you need a regrind on the crank and oversize bearings add another $600 min. An engine overhaul and clutch is starting at $2500 for parts and machining + labor. Is it worth it? I think so, you will have a dependable motor good for another 100,000 miles.

Last I looked I there wasn't any V700 Gilardoni available. You might have to go the replating route.

I did hear rumors that Ambassador cylinders could be fit if the spigots were turned down just a bit to fit the V700 cases?

Looks like clouds in a night sky... If the lighter colored area is missing chrome, then I'd completely disassemble the engine and check everything for damage and to clean the sludge trap.

No V700 Gilardonis for the last several batches. Ambassador cylinders have a slightly larger diameter spigot and are .2 mm taller according to Guzziology.
